Rear trunk cable broken

Here is the deal. My trunk cable was obviously broken. I took it to the dealer and they showed how to get to the emergency cable by the left rear wheel well behind the inner fender liner. They said to fix it there would cost $140 in parts and another $700.00 in labor! I was incredulous to say the least, and declined to let them fix the car. Another Porsche specialty shop quoted me $70.00 for the parts and about $200 to fix the cable, though they had never physically done one before.

I took the car home, located the emergency cable and attached a long cable tie and duct taped it where I could reach it in an emergency through the wheel well. I opened the trunk and found the cable broken with about 1 1/2 inches of steel cable left on each end. I got some wire out of my toolbox, wrapped it around the opening latch, and tied it to each piece of broken wire. The actuator still works fine, as I could hear it moving when I hit the sill switch to open the trunk. To get to the latch just remove the 2 screws holding the plastic cover in the trunk. Now the switch works perfectly, and there is no visibly evidence of the jury-rig repair. A lot cheaper then $850.00!

I used small swage blocks to actually connect a new wire to the trunk cable that loops around the post on the latch and swaged onto that block. Fix is a like new fix, not noticeable.
