Starting and stalling issues
I have a '97 2.5l boxster with around 117k miles on it. Bought it mid June and am now it's third owner. Love the car and it runs great so far except for one incident. Drove it out to the bar had a drink came back out to drive home and couldn't get it to start. It would turn over and start for a quick second but I would through it in gear and it would die again. Seem to be a fuel issue to me most likely my fuel pump going bad. I had over half a tank but I decided to throw some gas in since all my other tricks didn't work. Started and ran after a few tries and I was able to get it home. It drove okay not as good as normal and my idle seemed to be a little eradict jumping around 700-900 rpms. At the higher rpm range it still ran great. I've made a checklist of stuff to do this weekend before I go out buying a new fuel pump and sender unit. My question is there anything else I should add/check or any other possibilities of what could be wrong with her. Thanks for any input!
Porsche Checklist: Replace fuel filter Test the fuel pump electronics Clean throttle body Clean mass air flow sensor Replace battery Get engine codes ran Inspect crank sensor Run sea foam injector cleaner Check immobolizer under seat for water damage Check for possible water in gas tank Check spark Check air pump system Variocam actuator check |
You have the optional PAD safety cutout.
Porsche Alcohol Detector. It detects alcohol in your system and won't let the car run. All seriousness aside. It looks like you have done some searching and came up with a good list of things to check. |
Haha how do you bypass said PAD? ;)

If not done recent, do plugs, check coil packs.
Not sure if sea foam is advised to run. |
Good list there. Good chance fuel filter needs to be changed. It's under the front underbody panel so it gets forgotten easily. You can test fuel pressure at the fuel rail using the schraeder valve there.

Read the codes before doing anything more. Some codes do not light the CEL. Checking the variocam on a 2.5?

Just had the same issue with my 00' 2.7
Been running fine, stopped for coffee and now wouldn't start. Had to wait about 20 mins and then started and been running fine since. Well since yesterday when it do it again!! I have heard it could be the fuel sender valve? No expert so any advice welcome |
Replaced the fuel and air filter, pulled the throttle body and let it soak in carb cleaner overnight, cleaned all the plenum boots, tighten all the clamps, cleaned all the sensors, and put in injector cleaner. Turned it over and it struggled a little bit then it kicked on there was a distinct pop sound and then she started running fine. My idle held steady at 900 rpms no more weird smell. I did notice after the fan kicked off I can hear a slight hissing noise I noticed it before but never payed much attention (especially since I don't take the engine cover off often and it's not noticeable with it on). Anybody know if this is a fairly normal sound or do I have some kind of vacuum leak?

Thanks for the up date, it's nice to know the outcome of a problem not just hearing about the problem, and if it's running fine don't worry to much about a slight hissing noise unless it gets worse.

Mine has Same symptoms
Curious if you figured it out?
I cleaned my MAF and it helped once, but not the second time. Thanks. John |
