Well, to be quite honest, you did have two type 2 revvs on the durametric. I think you need a new engine

I'm not finding anything constructive above 6,000 rpm and the gear ratio spacing puts me in a plenty meaty spot so I shift there.
I didn't click "never, it's a porsche why would someone hurt it like that?" because I'm quite sure the engine can take the revs, nor am I worried about offending my car. I'm old and learned to drive vehicles before rev limiters existed. I personally find the na-na-na sound annoying, but that's just my opinion. I was on a "toys for tots" motorcycle ride last December and some guy on a Hayabusa thought he was the shiz because he kept sucking in the clutch and hammering that limiter. :confused: |

See, its exactly that. You aren't actually cool for hitting the rev limiter, but most people think you are when you hit it.
Combine that with 'it sounds nice to me, the driver' and...why not? Plus, you know the saying, 'a rev limit a day keeps the IMSB doctor at bay' |
I normally sit at 3k, city or highway. Sometimes lower if I'm just putting through a neighborhood.

On my 2.7 I hit the rev limiter (or redlined) almost every time I drove the car. My car had 48k miles and 12000 range 1 revs and 0 range 2. On my turbo I don't think I have yet hit the rev limiter. Btw my 986 imsb was in perfect shape. I think the single row 986 bearings need to see high revs.

12000 is insane, I think I had 3000+ last I checked. If my IMSB was thinking about shredding itself before, maybe I have stopped the process with my immature shifting strategies

Limiter one time, the first drive after I had taken it home and given it a good check-out. 6k frequently, but as it passes 6, I'm shifting.
There is a park under construction near my home. Nice fresh roads, lots of corners, and open parking lots not in use yet. First week of ownership I went out there to play. After a good 15 minutes of tire squealing turns and fast accel/decels I noticed that soccer practice at the adjacent park had stopped and everyone was staring at me. Oops. :o |

It's because even with a 7200 redline, just going to the 6000s puts me way past any speed limit and I can't see where I'm actually getting anymore out of the engine. The only reason to go redline is so the shift down keeps you at max HP/torque BUT you really can't do that on 99.9% of public roads Race track yes Even my usual 4-5000 shift point has me leaving the red light crowd way back until I hit the next red light. Then they pull up around me and shake their heads "It's just a Boxster - Mid-life crisis guy" Though the other day I was back roading and at the corner was a group of cyclist waiting for stragglers I went by mildly in first - no reaction. I took second up to 6k, glanced in the mirror(I'm so Vein) and all their heads snapped around to look and take in the glorious sound |
I have hit the limiter 2 times I think, once in first as I was accelerating out of a parking lot lot straight onto a deserted back road, and once because I came out of turn 7 at road Atlanta and forgot that I had downshifted to second because I wanted to get around some super slow traffic ahead of me. Each time I was like whaaaatt? Ooohhhh...
At a de I usually shift between 6000 and 6500. I am just taking it easy ;) on the street usually around 3500 if I am just easing along... |
I never have. Don't the 3.2 engines hit their peak at 6,000 RPM?

I can remember two times since I have owned the car, I remember the sensation and immediately let off the gas to a more normal 4K

I really flogged it in 2nd and 3rd gear. I never really felt the need for more power as it was always a downshift away.

I had over 29000 on my 01 before it blew at 89,000 with a stretched timing chain (according to Jake's admin). All were type 1 and usually were logged during fast starts in first gear.
BTW the way it is not a count of rpms but rather how many times a spark plug fired while at redline. |
I see no reason to flog a Boxster's engine up to redline in first gear, even under track conditions.
IMO, second gear is the real power gear, once you get her goin'; third gear is the kicker, fourth gear is cruisin', then fifth or sixth, in normal conditions............is just sustaining speed. I've never hit the rev limiter. Brought her to redline many times (2nd, 3rd, 4th). Empathy towards one's machinery is important, and not just in maintaining longevity. Just sayin'.............. TO |
I found 2nd and 3rd were the gears I was mostly in when I was driving through light traffic and the red line in third was my speed indicator telling me to slow down. Fourth and fifth were just to cruise and conserve gas.
So what would cause the elongated chain. Abrupt take-offs? Missed shifts? That is the only mode of failure that turbos suffer and mostly those with the x50 package and bigger k24 turbos. |
I almost never do, but this w/e at Kansas Speedway I banged it several times in the early sessions. She would accelerate so fast, I didn't have time to shift. Plus there was a lot going on learning a new track. Didn't like hitting the limiter, but got to where I wasn't doing it the 2nd day.

I think I would put it like this: nailing the throttle 100% from 0 mph and hitting rev limiter is probably 100% load and the worst case in terms of something bad possibly happening and is mostly for Justin beiber and other immature youngins.
The rev limiter behavior I frequently see is slow takeoff rpms up to 4k then giving 100% throttle up to redline and holding throttle at 100% through second and third. Obviously you are going pretty fast by then, but luckily my commute has lots of metering lights and on ramps. It just feels nice to grab those extra few hundred rpms up to the limiter; it's like 'stretching' the legs of the engine..for lack of a better expression |
