Yipeee !
I purchased a 99 about a month ago.129000 km when I bought it.I just had the oil changed ( 133000 km ).Not a bit of debris in the filter, zero . It has a short little start up rattle...sometimes.My mechanic says his 99 and a customers 01 has it too. Anyone else ?

When I start mine, people nearby covers their face with both arms just in case... I've understood this is to prevent nuts & bolts from my car rear-end flying towards them 
Sounds like it anyway.... poor things

Yes I believe every 986 ever created in all of known time does the startup rattle, redline oil and refreshed/new chain tensioners help

I remember seeing a video from a famous writer of one of the car rags who got a chance to drive the Porsche that was a big winner in I think 1985....think unlimited race car. Anyway he said when he started the car up it sounded like a 1960's motorbike.....I always found this to be pretty accurate. My Boxster S sounds terrible (IMHO) starting up...but in a second it is as smooth as silk...no rattles nothing but Purrrr

I personally don't hear it often. I turn the volume of my old but new AM/FM radio before turning the key to start, wait 1~2secs and drop the volume back to normal.
I'm dead serious mate, can't stand that rattling noise for even half-sec.

+1 on Start up "What the hell is wrong with my engine" noise
It has gotten worse the less I use the car. When I daily drove it, noise wasn't there.
Now that it basically sits, driving once or twice a week, it's more pronounced.
I have tried cranking, shutting off just before turn over, then restart to get the oil around a bit. That helps but then I notice the secondary Air pump does not come on, on the restart

+1 as well....my '00 S is a rattler...but as stated before, smooth as silk after a second or two.
Nice car BTW! What is that badge on the trunk? It almost looks like a "Ruf"...

I have a cat rattle on my new car, but aside from that both of my boxsters sounded fine on startup.

Ya it`s a RUF badge. There`s two little ones on the front fenders as well. Previous owners . Also a RUF plaque thing inside with the PO`s name engraved ? Haven`t been able to find any history on that. I was stressing out a bit waiting to see the oil filter. I owned a 16v 944s so I`m use to Porsche engines with a ticking time bomb installed.
