A/C Not Very Cold
 

2000 S, 58k miles. A/C works great if outside temp is under 85. Over that, and it just does not get very cold. I would think it is not low on freon, because then the cold would come in and out, no? I am no expert. The key to me is that the A/C works very reliably, just not that well. Anyone have any insight?

Usually this means the refrigerant is on the lower side. Over time seals may shrink and slowly the refrigerant goes away...

I just recharged the system on my Gallardo and it is now ice cold again. I got the kit from Red Tek. They also sell a leak stopper thing and something to take care of the seals (so they swell up again). Get all that and you can do it at home. It is very simple. For less than $100 I bet this will fix it for you.

Check the outlet temperature when it isn't cold outside. You can do this with a kitchen thermometer. Just stick the probe in a vent; set the temp to it lowest value on the center console and let the AC run for a few minutes. The outlet reading should be about 45 degrees. If it much higher, then you're probably low on refrigerant.

You can get a refill kit at any car parts shop. It's best to have a gauge so you can tell if you're high or low as you're filling the system. Over filling is bad.

See if the refill fixes your problem. If it does, then you're done. If not, take the car to an AC shop and have them look for leaks. The last think you want to do is use a stop leak product especially if the parts cheap to replace. Most stop leak products can clog up the system and lead to even bigger problems. I'd only use a stop leak product as a last resort.

If you do go down the stop leak path, look into a Red Devil product. It uses a different technology than the others.

I've not looked at the boxster but other cars have the air diverter flap and they sometimes get stuck and not getting the full AC air diverted to the car interior.

Perhaps a bit of poking and prodding could reveal it that is what is occuring.

Thanks all for the info! I checked the pressure....was at 20-25 PSI. I brought it up to low 40s and now A/C is nice and cold...about 25-30 degrees colder than ambient.
