Bizarre Clicking Sound.

Hi There,

I just recently changed my rear wheel tires and a couple of days later I noticed a bizarre clicking noise coming from the rear of the car. It sounds like it's coming from the engine.

I have uploaded a video of the sound to youTube. If someone could please have a listen and let me know what it might be that would be great.

Thanks

Sounds like a classic valve tap.

Loose spark plug? Exhaust leak?

Cause and is it an easy fix?

My truck (pushrod 6) makes the exact sound. Always a perfect tap, faster with revs, perfect rhythm. Crisp sound. My issue is a stuck lifter that gets quiet with oil pressure. If valve tap likely a lifter. Oil changes and filter all on schedule?

That's under the valve cover and under the cam. Last DOHC car I had had hydraulic lifters that stuck and went bad. Also made exact same crisp tap.

I just had the oil and filter changed over a month ago. First the idiot put the wrong filter in and it was leaking like crazy so I had to take it back and he put the correct oil filter on this time and the leaking has stopped since then.

A lifter will make a noise at half the engine speed. the video sounds like a lifter/cam follower or whatever they call it. I would check it pretty quickly.

I would want to know what PN filter was used, oil weight, and if checked when filter was re-changed. If the filter used first was restrictive, well......

Jake Raby also mentions pick up screen being clogged with gasket making material is common if pan has been pulled.

No noise today. How weird. I won't get too excited because I know it will come back.

That's what my truck does. Taps when low on oil, very cold weather. Then it vanishes for days. Then taps loud and crisp. Always goes away before it warms to operating temp.

Sounds like a pulverized lifter. Needs fixing soon or it will grenade and send shiny bits everywhere internally.

^ same failure in TheStone's recent thread for his track car.

so apparently a noisy lifter is not something you can live with it seems...

Here you go. A little lifter disaster.

Who was it that had the broken valve spring? That thread had good pics and was more along the lines More would follow since his has not failed to that extent yet. Of course the OHCs come off, but not the heads.
