rough noise from engine

can anyone help with a diagnosis? occasionally, as i am in 3 or 4 gear...as i let off the gas, there is a loud hum or growl from the engine compartment. it typically only happens when the rpm is about 3000. it will go away if i press on the gas or clutch again. but it is annoying. it only happens when i am driving and let off the gas. it sounds similar to driving on a very rough road.

thoughts?

Mine does it when hot, it's annoying but at least you know it's what Porsche call 'normal'.
