Another SSK Thread!
I recently traded my beloved '01 986S for a lightly used '07 987S with 47k miles. I had forgotten just how long the shift throw was in OEM trim!
First mod will be to install a short shift kit. Back in the olden (golden?) days of the 986, the options were slim and the decision was easy. It was pretty much B&M or live with the Mac truck throw! Today however, there are a whole bunch of options, which begs the question. Which one? I loved the B&M in my 986 and that is probably my current front runner. However, I have no experience of the other offerings nowadays. The extra effort while cold is a bit of a non problem here in CA, especially with a garaged vehicle. So, quick poll. What SSK do you have and would you do it again, stick with stock or go for something different? In no particular order: SSK, Throw Reduction, Bushing Material, Approx Price Porsche 987 SSK, 35%, Plastic, $430 B&M SSK, 35%, Fixed-Aluminium, $300 Evo Billet SSK, 35%, Adjustable-Aluminium/Delrin, $260 Schnell SSK, 30%, Adjustable-Aluminium/???, $180 Ralco RZ SSK, 40%(!), Fixed-Aluminium, $95 Agency Power SSK, 35%, Aluminium, $250 Comments and opinions welcome  |
I have the chinese version of the Schnell (probably one in the same) and it's not the best. I'm thinking that I should have spent a lot more on mine to get something that works more smoothly.
And wow, it's tough shifting when the motor is cold, even in the summer here in Houston. First couple of hundred yards are challenging. |
I'm also in the market for a short shifter so I'll be very interested to hear what kind of experience other members have with their short shifters. Do I really need to spend $400 for a decent quality shifter?
Also, Highlander when you say "Adjustable" what exactly is adjustable? |
Honestly, go with what you know! The B&M is tried and true, and you know what it is and what it isn't. Isn't that what you are looking for? Similar feel to what you had? Go with it...you will be plenty happy.

I picked up a used 997 Factory SSK for my 986 and LOVE it, but I would never pay $450 for it.
