Sloppy Shifter
Thanks for the replies concerning the short shifter I am going to drive a friends and see what I think. In the meantime....does anyone have a fix for the sloppy play in my current shifter?

I would replace it with an aftermarket shortshifter.
It's night and day and the sloppiness is gone. |
Pull up the leather surround and have a look and see if the PO put some change in the ash tray and where it has migrated. Also look for loose connections.

The only fix is to replace the worn bushings. Unfortunately, no one (including Porsche) sells just the replacement bushings. Hence, most people replace with an aftermarket short shifter or an OEM shifter (986 standard throw or 997 shorter throw).

I replaced mine with a 997 shifter and really like it. Mine was sloppy too 2001 base with 87000.

My shifter was really sloppy - right up until the ball joint at it's base failed and I had to drive home stuck in 3rd. Have a look at this thread, was $15 for the new part and the shifter isn't sloppy anymore:

Sunset Porsche sells that part for $18.29. If you're going to go to the trouble of replacing the shift cable fastener I would also do the shift cable end (Part No. 996.424.145.01). That piece is $14.67. With shipping, both pieces were $39.16.
