What to do about my seats
 

I am curious what others are thinking out there....

My 2000 has Savannah leather and I plan on keeping it bone stock. The passenger seat is perfect, but the driver's seat is starting to wear. I have a tear starting in the seat cushion. I want to get it redone, but to match would probably need to do both seats. So far, I see that this is looking like an expensive proposition - $2-3k.

I have not seen seats very available in the used market, but I have only found any at all on Ebay. Any one know of any other sources to check?

I am an old school 80's Porschephile....I remember the ultra-premium sheepskin craze back then....any revival? I had sheepskin covers on my 300k mile hi-performance Miata and loved them....all you P guys gonna shun me if I go that route? :eek:

I've been dealing w/ them for over 20 years. The have a fairly large 986/996 inventory and are great to work with/priced fair.

Old school Sheeps are OK, just don't get carried away w/ the BBS wheels. :D

I would have the seat repaired by a local upholsterer and re-dyed to match the existing. You can send a sample to Colorplus (Surflex) and they will mix a dye to match your existing, aged leather. Many concours guys have gone this route with extremely positive results, as we have several of the the top National competitors/judges in our PCA region.

I liked the old sheepskin covers. I had them in a 300k+ mi. Mercedes 300D. Although nothing was more durable than the old MB-tex. I wish Porsche would use it. My Boxster seats are still in good condition and I've been thinking about sheepskins for them to protect them…. Anyone else do this??

why bother. You're just going to wear it out again. This is what I would do.
Wet Okole from Hawaii. Wet suit material that stays cool in summer and has a little bit of cushioning. Saves your leather from more wear.
No one could ever tell they were seat covers when I had them on my Miata. Handy when I got caught in the rain.

I do however need to re-do the cushions for my GT3 seats. I'm thinking of doing alcantara on the doors, seats and steering wheel with some heavy twill in dark grey for the carpeting.

Yeah, my seats are relatively good as well - just a small, just-started tear in the driver's cushion. I think I am going to go with the sheeps to protect from further abuse.

My Miata at 300k - I removed the sheeps to clean them and the seats underneath were still brand new looking...

I've already done a quick search on ebay etc. for sheepskins. There's so many to choose from. Any suggestions?

I have been looking at Shear Comfort...they are totally custom and they even sent out samples so i can be sure to get the right color... They aren't cheap though, at $600/pair.

My driver seat was looking worn on the door side bolsters. Looked faded with some deep cracks starting. I tried Fibrenew.com and they did an amazing job. You can't see the repair and it looks like new. They even touched up the gear shift and hand brake leather that looked worn.

I don't know how they made any money though, it took the girl 4 hours to repair and color match, and the price was a flat rate $250.00. They even came to my place to do the work.

I don't know if all their technicians are equally well trained but I was happy with the results.
