tipping the valet in your Porsche

How much do you tip?
Lately I park in the same garage and see the same valets.
$5 in and $5 out. Parking is $15 - $45.

Davev 06-08-2014 06:01 PM

It wouldn't matter the car- $3 each way.

TypeA 06-08-2014 06:02 PM

You should add, "Whats a valet?" to your poll.

Perfectlap 06-08-2014 06:06 PM

In NYC its the guy who makes sure your car doesn't get nicked. Come to think of it, an Abe Lincoln is sounding a little chiseler like.

BFeller 06-08-2014 07:00 PM

Honestly - the Tip (not the transmission - aren't they the same everywhere?) would be different in NYC verses NC. Since I don't go anywhere - or have anywhere I want to - that has Valet service I have nothing to add.

Nothing...never would hand the keys to my P-cars to any valet. That's what the DD is for.

I cringe at valets. Too many stories of idiots who don't know how to drive a stick and frying the clutch.

I avoid like the plague any American kid valets. American kids now a days don't drive and if they do, they've never seen a stick. In fact, one of e best anti theft devices is a stick. The idiots get about a block before hey abandon the car because they don't know how to drive it.

So if I have to valet, I make sure the guy is Hispanic and speaks no English. That means he grew up in Latin America, where most cars are sticks, and he knows what he is doing. And then I tip generously.

I've never seen or heard of "valet" parking and we never tip in Australia, unless its for exceptional service from (say) a waiter.....
Why would you tip someone when they are being paid to do their job??

Maybe twice a year we go to a resturant that has valet. He gets a 5er when I get the car back. They pool it and split it up.

mountainman 06-09-2014 03:44 AM

As some have already said, I try very hard to avoid dents and dings and that also means avoiding valets.

ekam 06-09-2014 03:53 AM

No valet for me. You should YouTube valet videos.

Deserion 06-09-2014 04:28 AM

I don't valet if I don't have cash on me, so I rarely ever valet. :p Only places I have were at J. Alexander's ("free") and the Hilton in Daytona Beach (mandatory for their garage). Generally I do $5 in/$5 out.

CoBeerToad 06-09-2014 05:56 AM

I always wondered whether you should tip on the way in or the way out. I don't think I've ever valet parked my car being out in the suburbs, but a five-ski in and out seems fair to me. Now I want to find somewhere and do it just for the experience.

I never valet. I park as far away from people as possible, even in my xterra. I try and avoid any extra human involvement, most things are easier that way.

That's why I use the self checkout lanes. Avoid human contact.

I don't even valet Avis' cars. Skip. I park and walk. After I drop off Mrs. Flavor at the front door.

steved0x 06-09-2014 06:44 AM

I like the new Dodge Challenger that comes with a special Valet key, that limits revs to 4000 and turns off some other stuff I believe.

If I know I will be valeting a car, I drive my SUV, wife's SUV or one of kids' cars. I know a couple of guys / kids that work high end restaurants as valets, some of the stories I've heard them relay that they see as amusing would make my blood boil if it were my car. If a potential headache can be avoided do so.

jsceash 06-09-2014 07:16 AM

I don't believe we have any valet parking within 200 miles. Far from any celebs or big shots. Even all the capitol parking is on your own.
