How much of the interior is actually leather?
Cleaning question.
I have an '05 987 without the full leather option. I know the seat faces are leather. I am assumiing the sides and back are vinal. I am also assuming that the steering wheel is leather. What about the shift knob & boot? The emergency brake? Anything else I missed? |
Dr. Kill, you are correct about the seats and steering wheel.
The shift boot, knob and e-brake I am not sure about in the standard leather package. I checked the order guide and the Boxster Brochure, but it is not clear. FYI, for a good leather conditioner, go to www.colorplus.com |
just used the Leatherique prestine clean....very nice.
1Z leather for more frequent cleanings. My interior has never looked better. |

i like the seats did you get these as aftermarket or as original fitting from your dealer when buying the car? Electric ? cost ? |
As a general rule of thumb, anything that is stitched would be leather. I too have a 05 987 and from what I can tell only the following items are leather (and do not include the standard steering wheel):
Shifter boot (on my manual) Seat faces Handbrake lever This would be supported by Porsches 06 guide where one could deduce what is not leather in the base by reviewing the list of what is upgradeable to leather (pretty much everything). http://i2.tinypic.com/osball.jpg |
I am pretty sure the steering wheel (standard) on the 987 and 987S is leather wrapped. This information is from the order guide:
"Three spoke steering wheel in leather with full color Porsche crest". |
I'm pretty sure the standard 987 wheel is not leather wrapped. I have it and the stitching does not seem to be real, nor does the wheel feel like leather. From what I can see on Porsche's web site, a leather-wrapped wheel is a $490 option.

Everyone thank you for your help on this issue. SD, did you get your Box from Pioneer in San Diego? |
I got mine from Pioneer. :)
And seriously, that wheel is NOT leather-wrapped. if it is, it's the most plastic-feeling cow I've ever touched. "Genuine-leather finish". Nice trick, Porsche. |
Not to be a turd but for the price, could not this car come with "full leather."
 |
Please, don't get me started, man! Porsche...rrrrarrrgghhh!

Dr. Kill, unless your wheel is non-standard, you're going to have a hard time convincing me it's leather. It doesn't look/feel like leather and after 9 months, it sure ain't wearing like leather. It looks like the "real" leather is option 459. "Not to be a turd but for the price, could not this car come with "full leather." - Brucelee Comparing Porsche standard kit with similar models is a joke ain't it? My Merc feels like a Maybach compared to the Box. I also read that Z4M first drive you guys posted a Google-news link to and for the price of a Boxster S with no options you get some serious freebies like full DVD-nav (not to mention a faster/more powerful car). I plan to stop by the local BMW dealer when they start taking deliveries and give her a whirl....who knows. |
On my 2000, full leather got me the seats, wheel, shift knob, e-brake, and door airbag covers... I think that's it.

I think I am changing my mind on its accuracy though. This morning when I got in my car to go to work, I put my hands on the wheel and had to raise an eyebrow. It doesn’t really feel much like leather to me either. I don’t much care either way, I just need to know what type of cleaner to put on it. |
Maybe it is the mysterious "leatherette?"
 |
