Breaking news! Boxster s smoked by subaru impreza!!!

And with two big guys in it. Took off from a light in a wide open industrial area. Just is two. Shifted into second and by 6k they passed me like I was changing a flat tire. Shut down by 3rd gear because they were turning left at next light.

Small, quick car. Didn't notice what letters were after the word Impreza.

Thought to myself, yes, I'm Imprezed. :(

golonaus 04-24-2014 06:06 AM

Nothing braking about it.
Wrx with 1000$ in mods or stock sti will do it to You

seningen 04-24-2014 06:11 AM

My 30yr old 951 will blow the doors off my S (and probably that imprezza too
And make that left without shutting her down :-)

However I like my S in the twisties, a nice cool evening top down drive, or doing a 4 wheel drift on track :-)

Some special Edition STI or WRX or ...what ever, who cares?
Next time turn down your window and ask: Pardon me, would you have any Grey Poupon?

:D

RandallNeighbour 04-24-2014 06:33 AM

straight line - fast car
curved line - fast driver

rp17 04-24-2014 06:59 AM

Impreza Wrx STIs with the turbos is ok.

Perfectlap 04-24-2014 07:10 AM

You don't need a sports car to go fast in a straight line. Any pick-up truck will do.

In such situations the the round thing in front of the driver acts more like a handle than steering wheel.

Nine8Six 04-24-2014 07:19 AM

Just my VW Passat 1.8 TSI 'w/ automatic gear box' is making any Boxster 986 look like he is changing a flat tire. 2.5, 2.7, 3,2 doesn't matter... they are all too slow. The Passat doesn't work as well in twisty road tho :/

But that is not the reason why we like the Porsche Boxster so much isn't it

Good weather coming here over the weekend. I plan on taking off that rag roof down for the first time of the year

Here's a demonstration of the power of modifications

Drag Racing - Top Gear - Series 19 Episode 2 - BBC Two - YouTube

You can see a Lexus LFA, an SRT Viper and an Aston Martin Vanquish being trounced by a pickup truck and other assorted vehicles.

But can those other vehicles actually turn?

jb92563 04-24-2014 07:41 AM

Yaa, a Imprezza WRX sti has 305hp so in a straight line your 250hp isn't going to catch him. Plenty of grunt.
And if its one of those 4 wheel drive subbies then watch out!
Rally Team USA | Subaru Motorsports

But a Porsche is not a dragster right, and they don't race in Ovals much either.

Its all about the curvy fun stuff where the Porsche is most fun.

But, you will soon be able to buy a 718 and get your own 300+ hp 4 banger with the Porsche Moniker if you want so you can be just like those others :p

BIGJake111 04-24-2014 12:28 PM

Simple answer, AWD, even if the car weighed more than the boxster and had the same HP, AWD will have you beat.

Topless 04-24-2014 12:57 PM

We have a Subi who drives with us regularly that has been well developed for the track. He is approaching Cup Car lap times but has over $100k in motor and suspension mods.

jacabean 04-24-2014 01:19 PM

they can have their STI s , not a whole lot of fun to drive , every kid has one boosted up and wants to race. A DI 987 S will have a good run with them .

nieuwhzn 04-24-2014 08:05 PM

My Viggen destroys my Boxster in a straight line. The fun ends with the understeer in the first corner.

dude you have a Viggen, how cool. Awesome cars!

woodsman 04-25-2014 11:21 AM

Turbo to 'twister' is like a quickie to a 3 hour 'tantric journey'. If you have to ask....

RawleyD 04-25-2014 11:40 AM

It's not a drag car.
And there will always be faster cars than the Boxster :)
Don't worry about it, that's not why we drive them :)

I enjoyed driving the original 2002 WRX with either 16" or 17" wheel option.
I also enjoy out running stock STI s.

batshapedheart 04-25-2014 03:02 PM

If you got a Boxster to "smoke" other cars, you chose the wrong car.

I had and evo 8 back in the day that had no problem with the WRXs and the STIs but still not the driving pleasure of a sorted Boxster S . Even my 996 with PSS9s is still not as fun to drive .

Oh, not at all. Just never thought an impreza had that kind of power. I'm not up on cars. Love my Box car!

BIGJake111 04-25-2014 10:00 PM

sounds imprezive :rolleyes::dance:

Somewhere in 2000 I ordered the BoxsterS new and had to wait 9 months for it :-(
Bought a Subaru Impreza GT Turbo to fill the time gap. But finally when the BoxsterS arrived I kept it around. It was equipped with the Prodrive Performance Package (PPP) and yes it was faster than the BoxsterS.

Older Impreza's are really nice and cheap cars. You will find the cheapness back in the interior, crappy brakes and suspension. Can all be modded but prepare to pay a lot of money and still end up with a Impreza.

BoxsterS is still around after 13+ year. Impreza is long gone by now. Currently the BoxsterS is joined by a BMW 130i of my wife and my other two toys being a BMW e46 M3 and a Mitsubishi EVO 8 MR RS. All of which are faster than the BoxsterS. Actually the 130i is a nice match but the M3 and especially the EVO run circles around the BoxsterS. And in curves as well.

But and the end of the day the BoxsterS is the car I will keep when for some reason in the future I have to make a choice. There is so much more to a nice car / driving experience than just pure power or even nice handling. The joy of driving topless. The mid-engine balance, the pureness of an atmospheric flat-six going through its rev range, etc.

That being said, all of the mentioned cars have their nice things that I really like and appreciate. Even the old cheap Impreza. Just reading this thread makes me smile and think of that car again. Nice, thank you.

Mark.

You do realize that Boxsters are slow in a straight line, right? :P

Yes. Figured that one out. Much faster than my Ranger!

White with blacked-out wheels? extremely LOUD??

So, it happened again. WXR or whatever they are. Park City to SLC, I-80.

I pass him at 85, he shoots by. I hit near redline in 4th or about 110, Shift to 5th, and at 120 I am right there with him, straight line up the long pass. I have not really ever compared to another vehicle at higher speeds. COPS, please do not read any farther.

Over the top of the pass, you can see a long ways. No traffic. As I match him (110) with several lengths between, I can see that he can pull away with ease, but I catch him easily without going any faster at curves, as he starts wide and the car leans into each turn, then he corrects to inside. The Box sits middle lane, and really doesn't feel like it leans very much. He was struggling to feel comfortable in each long corner, but the handling on the Box was far superior.

I'll take cornering over the extra ponies any day....and yes, I know better. It was over in a few minutes but I never tried to pass. Just matched him. I know that should stay on the track, but that's my cool story, bro.....

CHRISP357 01-04-2015 06:36 PM

Those Impreza guys get to enjoy their cars twice as much as we do. When they drive it and ten years later, when it's been recycled, they can drink their beer out of it.

a Renegade LS conversion with a nice heads and cam package should change that;)

I had a new jeep (must have been turbo'd) just barely start pulling away from me at the beginning of second, I started gaining and was good with that and let off. There are plenty of pickups out there with some big HP what can smoke me at the line but as has been said already here, the curvy roads, top down, sexy car, classy car, prestige...

mikesz 01-05-2015 06:51 AM

I worked with a guy back in the 80's that had a subie. I was a VW guy and we would argue our points on the 2 makes. Well now my wife and I are on our 3rd subie. AWD, great on gas, low repair costs, and they maintain value. I drove a WRX STi and it had amazing power! I had a hard time figuring out when to shift. The car never "wound out" in gear it just keeps pulling and the grip is amazing for a car that costs $35k! I don't plan on getting rid of my 99 Boxster but I think my next daily driver will be a WRX in subie blue.

Finnegan 01-05-2015 11:48 AM

My 2004 sti is an absolute beast of a car. Over 400 whp and wtq. But I'm still going to make the switch to a Boxster S. Anyone want to trade?

1rooster 01-05-2015 06:53 PM

Living in the mountains of North Carolina with it's awesome twisty roads I love driving the Boxster.I love driving on interstate in my PT CRUISER and the Hondas pull up beside me and try to show me up.I walk off and leave them and you should see their face when I slow down and let them catchup.Yes I said PT Cruiser,Mine is supercharged.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1420516008.jpg

My 2012 Hyundai would walk away from my Boxster in a straight line. But... would lose in the corners

white out 01-05-2015 07:41 PM

Honestly, a 986 is going to have a hard time keeping up with any STi in any situation. In the turns, the 986 will feel faster and likely be more tossable, but the STi will likely get through quicker since it can put all its power down.

Highway rolls are the absolute worst situation for Subaru's (aero, AWD, gearing). With some minor work, any turbo Subaru will gain 20-40whp and the EJ257 motor (STi, Forester XT, Baja turbo, Legacy Spec B) is good to 400awhp.

Like Porsche owners, many Subaru owners go for suspension and weight saving modifications before power mods.

I enjoyed my Subaru's, they were very fun cars. Totally different feel than the Porsche.

Finnegan 01-06-2015 10:43 AM

Handling and grip are very different feelings. My sti has tons of grip, but I wouldn't say it is a great handling car. It's very utilitarian, but I expect the enjoyment factor will be better in the boxster.
