Whining
 

Just took my car out of storage. It was about 50 degrees (F). When I started it, from the back of the car it sounded kind of like a water softener - a cyclical extra rrr. As I backed it out and drove it home about 7 miles, it was a noise at engine speed - like a car with an automatic transmission that makes noise or the extra load of power steering that causes a whine.

The coolant and oil were both full and the engine temp on the way home stayed at just over 180 per the stock gauge.

Any ideas for me?

It is at 125,000 miles. I do not know much history as the last owner was not a car guy. Thanks everyone!

At the mileage, could be a whole host of things. Start with items like serpt. belt, pulleys, and really watch the waterpump.

Take belt off. Start car. Still hear noise?

If no, pulley, alternator, or water pump. If yes, damn.

It is 45 degrees and won't be getting warmer for days. Should I leave the top alone until it is warmer? I don't need to drive it. I don't want to damage the plastic window and don't have heat in my garage.

I've been hearing a very similar sound, a whine that resembles a SUVs power steering whine when you max out the wheels in one direction.

Happens with the accessory belt off, as well as with it on. Happens at speed, clutch in, clutch out, and more noticeable in 3rd and 5th gear around 2-3k rpm under load. Absolutely follows engine RPM. Less noticeable/loud if feathering the throttle to maintain a constant speed, but still there.

Mine was low on Pentosin in the power steering.

Absolutely don't try to raise or lower the top when it's sub 60*F, or you'll have another issue!
