How much mileage is to much?
 

A buddy of mine hooked me up with a gent selling a 98. It is a beautiful car!! Nicely customized!! But it has 130K!! I'm not planning to sell the car I buy, so I'm not worried to much about resale.
But is 130K to many miles to start my life as a boxster owner. Or does it completely depend on how the car was maintained? He is asking for $7500

Oh my, that neighborhood, no one knows what a yard is do they. Anyways though as long as you get it for the right price, maybe even cheaper, and are prepared to pay for maintenance then that isn't too bad. Prepare for a second wave of many of the things that go out on these cars earlier on in their life though... if it hasn't had its AOS or Waterpump go out, then it very likely will soon... if either has went out before, depending on how long ago you may be ready to replace one again.... give the car a once over and it may be in better condition than many cars with 70k miles though, back when i was searching for a car there were some with 60k that were worse than ones with 110k. For the price though i do believe you can get a car with closer to 100k miles which is a bit better.

$7500, 130K mile car, driven in winters = better have a long list of previous work done with records to show it.

A Porsche, with that kind of mileage, that you plan to own long-term, that's still on its original shocks, control arms, clutch/IMS/RMS, water pump, coolant tank, AOS, fuel pump, rotors, cats, etc., is a Porsche you'll be fixing.

Actually 130,000 kilometers isn't that bad considering proper maintenance was done throughout it's life.. a history of maintenance and repairs done would be nice so you can monitor which ones would need immediate attention.
you mentioned customized, that could be a good thing or a detriment if not done properly..
bottom line is, have a ppi done by a qualified technician preferably familiar with Porsches, or Boxster in particular..could also help you make a responsible offer on the car..

130,000 miles=209,000 km.

If the car is in good shape with excellent maintenance and a good price, I'd go for it. $7,500 sounds pretty good.

What is on the side of the car.... the side ducts, i cant tell. I would be weary of the mods on this one, as said before some mods are great but some are really bad news.

7500 CDN seems to be sweet for this example, especially with the 18" Carrera wheels.

Perfectlap raises some excellent points; and the maintenance he describes should be checked against the owners records, along with a PPI.

Other than that, it appears to be a good deal.

On a side note................Jake......not meaning to bust your stones or anything, but you REALLY have to work on your posts. Maybe run them by your English teacher, perhaps.........?

Side vent stickers? I have never heard of them? Why would you put stickers on your Porsche?

To make the car look like the newer models. If those are the stickers that can be an good insight into the owners view of the car. If you really are at 209,000 miles your car is going to need a lot of work as there are considerable number of parts that are simply old and need to be replaced not to mention the wear parts. Walk away from this car and keep looking unless you are willing to spend sometime wrenching on the car. There are other lower mileage cars out there.

Can we see some more pics and maybe a list of mods? Is that 130 miles or km? Again, remember that prices on these cars are quite a bit higher in Canada than the US. I wouldn't be so quick to write this car off. It could be a great deal for someone that can do their own work.

But yeah, the fake 987 intake stickers have got to go.

these days, 130K miles for 1998 model is super low mileage. What makes these porsche different than other car is the high level of maintenance; you have to check the car more often.

Miles is certainly not the best indicator, but I would consider 130K mi as high mileage and given other options would avoid it. If you can hook it up to a durametric you can see how many hours and overrevs. This can be done without using one of the 3 VINs....e.g. if you know someone with one they can tell you without a "cost."

When I read between the lines on the comments made by the experts and the FACT that Porsche agreed to a limit of 130,000 miles in the IMS settlement, I believe the general life expectancy of a Boxster engine is around 130,000 miles.

I'm sure everyone will jump on this statement and tell the story of the one with 200,000, 250,000, and 300,000+ miles but if you are playing the odds, I believe 130,000 miles is a good figure for average engine life expectancy. To me it's like average life expectancy. If it's 78, someone will tell you about the lady that is 110...but I'm not betting on living to 110.

If the price is right, I would go in knowing it is likely a year or two car (assuming you drive it) and then either it's a roller to see or a project to ad your next engine into

Listen my trailer will be on a large plot of land :p. The issue is with the way they build them, neighborhoods were not always slab houses right next to each other for miles haha.

It's km not miles. Basically it has a little over 80k miles.

No, it has 130,000 miles on it. Around 209,000 KM. If it was 80 miles, It would probably be in my driveway now.
