ATF fluid for tiptronic?

Has anybody ever heard of using Ford Mercon fluid in a tiptronic?

Nope. Stick with OEM or Pentossin for your peace of mind. I stop messing around with modern AT when it comes to the fluid.

Oreilly's carry them for about $20/qt

Not here, but you can order the OEM stuff from Pelican for 19.00 a quart.

I've used the Aisin OEM Type-IV fluid in the past at 7.99 a quart.

I'll be using the Redline ATF this time around as it is local at napa and 12.99 each.

THanks for the replies. I have a customer that said he was told on this forum that it was OK. I warned him so if the trans blows up its on him.

People seem to forget some very salient points:
1. The Tip is a bloody expensive trans to replace.
2. Very few shops can do a decent rebuild on them.
3. The correct fluid is not that expensive, or hard to find.

Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic claims Esso 71141 compatibility. This link shows 20k miles of use in the ZF-5HP with good results on the used fluid analysis:

Good to know. Thanks.

If it's tested among the community and the result is good, then go for it. That's how I would make my decision.
