How did you get your lawyer to sign off on disabling the factory safety interlocks?

We (Robotop) could never get our lawyers over the hurdle of the risk of being sued by someone and having to try defend "purposefully and willfully disabling a factory safety interlock" in court.

I'm not sure if this is the proper place to have this conversation... but sure.

I do not have a lawyer here to help me out, however, at the time of purchase, I plan to make clear to the purchaser exactly how the relay was implemented, that this part is a modification of the original and holds no warranty against damage nor does it carry any 'safety interlocks' that the original relay has. By installing this, the users themselves are "purposefully and willfully disabling factory safety interlocks" and should exercise caution and responsibility during use. If you want to put an exact word to it, I'd say it is essentially a waiver spelling out that I cannot be held responsible for damage or injury as a result of using the relay.

Like I mentioned, I just think this is a cool and convenient addition to the car, if people are okay with the accepting the risks associated with installing it, then that's great. If they do not want to, so be it.

works for me

Who needs lawyers when you have QA stickers on each relay??

I think we are in good hands. QA basically means you can't be sued, right?

If that's the case then score! I was just using the QA stickers to protect against DOA. The disclaimer/ waiver was to protect me from getting sued

epapp 05-06-2014 09:38 PM

Actually, QA is a great idea. I think at least 50% who buy the relay will be curious of what's inside. Better patent the design before they all see :O!

The real problem is that the unicorn hair and fairy dust inside will blow away and it won't work anymore.

And the muffler bearings will fall out and need to be replaced with a special new set of ceramic dual row ones that get splash lubrication

Wilson01S 05-07-2014 07:05 AM

This is fantastic! I have to have one! If I source a few relays from local dismantlers does that come off the bottom line! HA!

Anyway I would love to place an order! Do you do paypal?

Also for future reference if you hold your iPhone in landscape your youtube videos will be full size!

epapp 05-07-2014 09:04 AM

His fairy dust is strong and thus far untainted by the grinding IMS bearing in his car.

When are you coming out with that IMS fix????

Coaster 05-07-2014 01:36 PM

Very Cool

I'm going to talk to the signifigant other about this, think she'll like it more than me. She hates sitting still in the car,LOL, and would love to be able to open the top as she drives away.

If you go over 20, it stops automatically, when you drop under 20, does it start back up? or you have to push the button again?

Above ~20mph all current and future operations stop. When the speed drops below the trip point, you have to re-enable movement yourself by clicking either of the buttons. That way it doesn't start moving again by surprise.

epapp 05-07-2014 02:04 PM

In terms of pseudo code:

if speed > 20
oopsnomoreram
else
topdown()

:D

If you'd code efficiently, you'd possibly have enough ram ;)

E.g.

if (speed > 0 and < 20) then
operate;
end

Unsigned int guys. No need for the less than 0... And it gives you an extra MSB to work... Oh yeahhh :)

Any update on the 97-99 models? My current relay is broken and I need a replacement :-)

I've finished the 97-99 relays last week and have been testing the hell out them on a lab bench since then. I wanted to get together with epapp this weekend and do an end to end test with his boxster before offering them in the relays.

The original plan still holds that a single relay can be used on a 97-99 or 00-04 and hold all the same functionality. That way of you upgrade your car or move to an older vintage, you can carry the relay with you.

In short, cross you fingers for this weekend or Monday being the shift from development to sales for all models.

epapp 05-07-2014 05:06 PM

You calling my car old?

Sunday it is?

Coaster 05-22-2014 01:20 PM

Did you finish the testing on this?

amagalla 05-23-2014 06:52 AM

I can say that it seems to work flawlessly on my 04. This simple replacement is genius. Nice work Shaw.

Dlirium 05-23-2014 07:22 AM

Wow, not sure how I missed this thread! the "new post" link seems to be lacking...

Anyway, I have a 2000 S and feel like I must have :-)

I didn't see anything on the install process - how easy/hard is it?

Point taken lol. I'm updating the videos as we speak

Shehadehd 05-23-2014 10:34 AM

So I just updated the video page and the original post with a more viewable version and added a 0-20mph speed operation video. Here's a link to them

Basic Functionality

Speed Test

Dlirium 05-23-2014 12:05 PM

So much better, thanks!

BruceH 05-24-2014 07:54 PM

We were driving home tonight and it started to sprinkle, so I slowed to less than 20 mph, hit the close button, and the top closed perfectly! Thanks Shehadehd! Awesome work!

Dlirium 05-27-2014 02:25 PM

Just installed mine today - works great...i really like this upgrade!!

danch 05-27-2014 11:34 PM

Can't wait to receive mine, great communication from Shehadehd along the way & can't wait to fit it. :D

Luckyed 05-30-2014 11:26 AM

Just ordered mine. Can't wait.
(I think my micro switch on the emergency brake was starting to act up)
Perfect timing!!

Shehadehd 06-01-2014 11:42 AM

I'm glad you're all enjoying your relay :)

I think I've sent out an email or unit to those of you who showed interest when I first posted it. I've since made 20 more and I'm ready to take more orders. Just drop me a PM if you are interested. Also, if you have any questions... ask away.

Thanks for all your support everyone!

Chuck W. 06-01-2014 11:50 AM

Just installed mine. Works perfect! Many thanks!

Coaster 06-02-2014 06:32 PM

Just got mine, makes me think it should have come this way.

Luckyed 06-03-2014 04:02 AM

Just put mine in last night.
Took all of 30 seconds.....
Works perfectly.
(Shehadeh is great to deal with too)

Shehadehd 06-07-2014 11:19 AM

The all-new Comfort Top :)

Happy you like it!

I have 16 more for 97-04 if anyone else is interested. If you have a 00-04, I'll still do the $50 refund if you send back the original relay.

Shehadehd, thanks for your reply. Are you shipping to Europe as well?

So long as there isn't some sanction against where it needs to go, I'll ship it.

epapp 06-09-2014 06:24 PM

So you wont ship if I live in Syria?

Shehadehd 06-11-2014 09:44 PM

Just pushing to the top the price since it's kinda buried within the thread now.

For domestic shipping (US). The unit alone is $200... But if you have a 00-04 and chose to return your original relay, I'll refund $50 from the purchase price.

Thanks again for all you'd support!

MK_Hatter 06-14-2014 02:14 AM

Mine has arrived, fitted in 1 minute and works fantastic! I cannot thank you enough Shehadehd, now my 1998 has better roof controls than my 2014!!! :D
