Questions about engine swap.

Porsche Boxster

it is 4 hours from me, and only has 44k miles. I am considering buying the car, parting out top and everything aside from the engine (and maybe transmission) to you fine folks here. I am assuming the 2.7 is compatible with a 2.5 chassis, are there anythings i would need to buy to make the swap possible. Are boxsters a PITA to engine swap? I am more doing this for the lower miles than the 2.7 over the 2.5. Could i recoperate the 2k. Any ideas on what to do with my old engine after the fact. Thanks for the help, i really want to do this.

You should be able to sell your 2.5 for $3,000 & it's not hard to install the engine just alot of steps. You will want to replace everything while the engine is out that you can't access with the engine in.

Does the 3k stick with 106k miles haha?

Would a manual be compatible with an auto, or even a 2.7 auto with a manual.. I am going to assume this 2.7 has an manual. going into my 2.5 chassis with an auto. Would i put the 2.7 man and engine into my car or mat the 2.7 engine to my auto?

As long as someone can hear it run in the car it may be worth more.

What yr is yours, what yr is the 2.7?

Somewhere along the line Porsech went to e-gas and you might have DME issues. That's why I ask the question above. With that info others can chime in on the effort to swap.

Don't know of Jake R is buying 2.5s but I think he does buy engines so he has something in stock when ppl come in with IMS boat anchors.

You should be able to recover your costs, it's just a PITA parting something out.

my car is a 99 the 2.7 is a 2000. parting it out isnt a priority, nor is breaking even because the added value of a 44k engine onto my car should be 2k at the least. Either way im getting a new engine cheap weather i can part out or not. Will definitly sell the top and anything anyone here is interested in... transfer anything i want off of the car onto my 2.5. Then i will likely sell what is left as just a chassis for like 1k maybe less once i have stripped everything that i want. Also after the swap i will sell my 2.5 engine and trans (if i put the 2.7 trans in)

depending on the value that the 2.7 engine with its lower miles adds to my car for resale. Toss in profit from parting out the other, selling my old engine and such, and maybe some of my own money. I may be able to buy an S by junior year.....  (oh my, my optimist is coming out haha.)

A lot of times we use 2.5 engines as test specimens for experimental products. As long as you don't care that the old engine will see a slow, painful death in the test cell, then I'll be interested in it.

Why do you want to swap your 2.5 for a 2.7? The difference in power is pretty minor, but it will be a pain to get it working. I'd look for a Carrera's 3.4 -- much more power and an easier swap.

I would agree, not much difference in power. However, you are young and this would make a great summer project. Plus, if you do it right, you might even make a little cash in the process of learning!

15 HP is totally not worth the money, I am just looking for th lower miles engine to help with resale haha , the whole idea is to make money and final goal is to buy an s on the end or another 2.5 with money to upgrade. Can anyone advise me on transmissions, my car is tip, can I mat the 2.7 to my tip or does the 2000 transmission need to go in with the 2000 engine?

BYprodriver 03-30-2014 04:57 PM

I don't think you will have any problem with the 2.7 in front of your Tip. Converting to manual trans will involve alot of changes but may increase resale value more than the low mileage engine.

This would alow me to sell the 5 speed from the 2.7 though which is a bit more money to be made. Haha now i just need the 2k for the roller, i already have someone that can help me haul the car up here. Also waiting on the seller to contact me as it is not specified that the engine is fine however it seems as if it ought to be.

BIGJake111 03-30-2014 05:03 PM

Anyone want to make a 2k investment haha i will split profits with you as well as return your 2k haha  (I am joking, but not entirely haha)

101 Projects for your Boxster - Project 11 has the details of what engines can and cannot be easily swapped.

As far as stripping a car for parts - I've done it with Jeep's a few times. You really need a space where people won't complain about what your doing. You also need to be able to get parts packaged and shipped. Two good seats, good top, good stereo and good doors would might get your money back quickly when selling them at low ball prices. However, I am not to well versed on what the demand of used parts might be for Porsche's.

Selling them quickly would get the pressure off to complete an engine swap to recover additional money/profit. Not that I am trying to convince you to buy it. In this case, It looks like someone has already been pulling parts - since since some of them are already missing.

Yes biggest thing right now is hearing from the owner and seeing what is left, specifically interior and engine... main thing to sell quick will be the top and transmission to get most of the 2k back to whomever i end up borrowing it from. (parents say i have to fund this myself haha)
