Replace that nasty mushroom shifter!
If you have a 5 speed and want a newer style shifter, here's one on ebay:

That would be nice but I think alot of people forget about the aluminuim knob route. I have it and other Boxster owners asked if it was aftermarket because they havent seen it before. It can be had for a low price from a junkyard,I bought my matching aluminuim knob and hand brake for $75 including shipping. Just a thought. Sorry about the low quality pic but you get a idea.

There are some good postings here on how to remove the shift knob. The approach can be summed-up as the "John Daley" method...grip it and rip it"!

Jim, my MY97 had no set screw. You really do just unclip the base and yank straight up! I imagine some model years have the set screw, but mine doesn't.

Here is a copy of the more serious posting I gave to Blinkwatt a few months ago:
"To remove the boot and knob you would first have to pry gentle up on the bottom edge of it. The bottom of the boot is snapped into the console. Next lift the boot over the knob to expose the back of the shift knob. Should there be a 5mm Allen loosen it and then just lift the knob off of the shaft. All other manual shift knobs without the 5mm Allen are simply pushed on and require more lifting force to be removed on the 986 and 996 models." |

Good stuff, I just got my shift knob in from the UK this morning, Ill install it when i get down stairs for lunch, Its the same one that OhioBoxster has... Black ball with steel top half.

The mushroom non-optional shift knob that comes stock in my boxster just slides off and the new one i just installed slides on then i have a allen bolt to tighten... incase anyone is interested as to why theres an allen bolt, It is cause the shift knob is Height adjustible.
If you slide it all the way down you and tighten the allen bolt, you will notice your shifter leather boot is pretty baggy, its cause you are at the lowest setting for height. I just installed it an hr ago, heres a picture VVV. |
