time for a really stupid question

New to me 2002 S with built in drink holders. Not sure if there are different styles mine are directly under the center dash vents and retract into the dash. Now the stupid question.........what kind of coffee mug fits these damn things ??? The size of the " cup " opening is just big enough for a water bottle/soda can my " normal " coffee mugs won't fit. I only carry coffee in the morning so I have a cup at work, normally I don't drink and drive :D So what are you using ?

BIGJake111 03-20-2014 03:35 PM

I've noticed it fits coke cans and hardly anything else. The whole right infornt of the vents design is great when you have the heat on and a cold coke in the cup holder.:(

rfuerst911sc 03-20-2014 03:50 PM

Yes it's less than an ideal location but looks better than a roll of duct tape on the floor :D And it is within easy reach. Oh well I will find something that fits.

Infernicus 03-20-2014 03:53 PM

Ugg. I have a '99 without cup holders. I would LOVE a cup holder. I went to Walmart and bought a four pack of the cheap cup holders that you can hook into the window. They aren't great. But what do you expect for four for a dollar?

BruceH 03-20-2014 04:00 PM

I took mine out. They are worthless especially with any kind of acceleration:eek: I got two of these:

BMW Cup Holders, Porsche Cup Holders, Ultimate Cup Holder - Cupholders / Drink Holders for BMW 3 5 7 Series, Boxster 911 Z4 Mercedes Audi NSX other fine cars.

They are a little pricey but work great! They hold almost any size cup or bottle firmly in place.

+1 on that. I have two of them, both on the passenger side so I'm not kicking it.

Add another +1 on that. I added two to mine. I didn't like the factory holders suspended over the radio & climate control. The factory units feel flimsy and can't hold a large Slurpee :)

rfuerst911sc 03-20-2014 04:33 PM

So when you pulled out the OEM cup holders what did you put into the opening ? Is there a factory cubby hole compartment or what ?

Yes, you can get a cubby or do what I did and put an ipad mini in!

This is what I had before:

Reference cup holders

I have a 1999 Boxster and I use a McDonalds drink carrier. One corner of the carrier fits nicely under the passenger seat adjustment handle.

It hasn't failed me yet and it is free.

Just my two-cents.

Another +1. Haven't used the old one since.

I don't have any problems with the Oe cup holders. A mcdonalds coffee or a regular sized soft drink from costco fits fine and stays in. Only if I take a turn like I am at Laguna Seca will I hold the drink in place with my hand

You take turns like you are at Laguna Seca with one hand?:)

So after so many years we've finally redefined the dash's holder thing on some of the 986s. A "Can Holder" as opposed to a true cup holder. Fascinating forum and people!

I've been traumatized and physically abused by my mum, father, sisters and other relatives for simply eating or drinking (messing) anywhere else than in a food & beverage designated area. Same goes for the cars. No eating No drinking No Injecting No Snorkeling No Smoking No Smootching in any of my rides. No No No!

Brand new can holder for sale here if anyone is looking for one :p

Ha! Your relatives would be horrified by my behavior then. I think I've done almost all of those in my Boxster. lol:eek:

ekam 03-21-2014 04:59 AM

In Europe when people want to have a drink they stop and go sit at a cafe. The cup holders are simply never designed for merika size cups.

I only use mine for thermos or water bottles since coffee always spills from it anyway and it ruins my dash & carpet.

Perfectlap 03-21-2014 06:35 AM

must be a tiptronic thread...:D

hope you meant "occasional" behavior. In that case it all sounds that you are very well alive and kicking ;)

Jake Raby 03-21-2014 07:46 AM

At least you have cup holders!

Jager 03-21-2014 08:11 AM

I use one of the cup holders to hold my GPS display (when I use GPS), during long road trips cross-country or traveling through the jungles of LA.

Taipanic 03-21-2014 10:58 AM

I agree with the recommended Ultimate Cupholders but while your waiting for those to come a medium Chic-Fil-A cup works good. Quality styrofoam keeps drinks cold for hours.

If I remember, a certain someone fiddling with see trough engine covers, proposed a cup holder solution (we are patiently waiting.)

rfuerst911sc 03-21-2014 12:54 PM

Looks like two ultimate cup holders are in my future. Thanks everyone.

Deserion 03-21-2014 10:15 PM

I don't know about you guys, but I've been fairly happy with the large (dual) pop-out holder in mine. Believe the 911 got it in 2003 in addition to the 986.

I don't know about yours but mine are right under the center vents so up very high in my opinion. If anything spills you are spilling onto electronic components directly below not a good design. Second I'm struggling to find a decent coffee mug that fits the small diameter of the cup holders. Third if you have the AC on the cold air is directly flowing onto/around your hot coffee another poor design. Your cup holder may be different than mine but the final straw for me on the ones in my car is it would get real ugly in an accident. Having hot coffee down low like with the ultimate cup holders just makes sense to me.

psquared39 03-22-2014 04:05 AM

Thanks for the tip, just ordered 2, a lower shelf and upper climate control trim. Stock "can holders" are coming out!

rfuerst911sc 03-22-2014 05:37 AM

I started thinking ( uh oh ! ) about the OEM cup holders. I find that when I use my smartphone for GPS it works perfect but gets warm/near hot. I'm thinking about fabbing a " puck " out of aluminum that will fit into the cup holder. The puck would have a groove cut into it. In that groove would be a flat plate positioned either vertical or canted back at a slight angle. Onto that plate would be some kind of device to either hold my phone or a conventional GPS. With the AC on the cold air would hit the back of the plate and cool the electronic device. Anyone done this ? I think it's a decent idea, I for one don't care for sticking a GPS on the glass with suction cup and this solution brings the device closer to your sight line. I'll have to see what I can come up with.

:D LOL! Some of us here have been tracking for 10+ years and can maneuver turns quite effortlessly. Tracking your car makes you a better driver with awareness, predicting other drivers and skills.

jb92563 03-22-2014 10:52 PM

The Boxster is a drivers car so drinking and eating are Verboten!

You can however have a smoke with the top down doing 200kph on the autoban.;)

Its also nice of them to arrange the afterthought drink holders so that they are sure to spill on your expensive electronics.

Its better to use an IV bag hidden in the rear shelf if you need to remain hydrated on long trips.

The lack of amenities is the sure sign of a real sports car:D

+1 on that. I had a gas-station paper cup with a leak that dripped coffee w/ sweetener into the climate control temp + button. In cool weather it's hard to push in, and in warm weather it stays clicked in (the sugar is sticky).

2001 was the first year for cupholders in the Boxster, and I think the center dash design was the same in 02. They feel flimsy and are not effective to "hold" cups when accelerating. Depending on the restaurant or gas station, they will do adequate for up to 20 oz cups, but the cup may be held by the circumference rather than the bottom. Bottled water, in my experience, will not fit.

w00t!!! all parts arrived, 30 minutes later I have ultimate cupholders, two cubby's in the lower half and the climate control above the radio... WHERE I CAN ADJUST IT!!!

Excellent, much better use of the space:cheers:

It seems like the location of the upholders plus the rather stiff suspension vibrates the carbonation out of a soda in 30 minutes or so.

Squozen 03-27-2014 05:48 PM

Never used the cup holders, never will. :)

This is how the 2003-4 cupholders are (this is from a RHD model, so ours are reversed):

Sometimes it gets in the way of the HVAC controls (above radio) but I can't say I've ever had a dripping issue outside of condensation. Generally I drink my soda too fast to be an issue. :D Also, have a GT3 console bin delete.

jmatta 03-28-2014 10:26 AM

No cup holders here...worthless and a plastic water bottle fits just fine wedged by the passenger seat adjuster.
