how do I know if I over revved
 

Been practicing on a local track and in the country with driving at high speeds with my boxster s. Wondering that if I slightly go pass redline during a downshift ( happened twice, apx 200-400 rpms above) is bad for the motor? This is also practicing my heel toe.

By the looks of it, if you're not zinging past 7800 rpm, you don't have anything to worry about.

Gentle suggestion: Avoid downshift over rev. That is the one of the best ways I know to score main bearings and induce rod knock.

When practicing heel/toe, shoot for 4k rpm rev match downshifts which is straight up on the tach. Porsche designed it this way so it could be seen easily with peripheral vision. 4k is usually pretty close to the sweet spot for acceleration through the next gear and if you target 4k, you may see 5k in the heat of battle, but not 7k with connecting rods sticking out of awkward places. Your motor will thank you with a long happy life.

The DME keeps a record of how many times you hit the rev limiter R1 and how many times there's been an actual over-rev R2. You can read these numbers with the Durametric software tool.

Cool, so nail 4k downshifts. ( think I shifted around 5 or 5.5k).

Pricey?? It's only $300 for a new one, and you can get it used for 1/2 that. You drive a Porsche dude - that's pocket change.

depends on your car. you have a 2001 (7.2 dme i think) so you only measure level 1 and 2 overrevs (level 1 is a bang into the limiter, level 2 is anything over). later cars (7.8 dme) have 6 ignition ranges as per boxster steve.

you shouldn't be overreving on the downshift. i can't think of a situation where the rpms would be so high, and the deceleration so minimal, that you would need to downshift and risk the overrev. a hot transmission and a shift into first instead of third, now that can happen ...

Trying to drive a porsche not like a mustang is a mind trick. Understanding that more gas mid turn is better than brakes for understeer and cornering at higher speeds is nerve racking

The overrevs happened while I was trying to pass traffic to get on and exit ramp so went from 4th to 3rd too soon ( traffic was my friends slk amg) and only glanced at the tac.

Also 300 is pricey when you just bought $400 sunglasses.

I guess we all set our own priorities. If those were prescription sunglasses then I can understand paying that much (although my last pair cost triple that). If you spent that on non-prescription shades and now can't afford to properly look after your car, well, maybe you should give your head a shake and re-visit the whole priorities thing.
