03 Boxster Base Right Speaker Stopped Working
 

So, I noticed that my right dash speaker stopped working... How do I go about investigating weather I need a new speaker?? Is there a fuse ?

Using the balance feature on the head unit and putting the sound all the way to the right only yields some bass and no trebble... thinking the tweeter might have blown??

The base speakers were single cone paper. Could be the speaker has gone. There is no fuse between the speaker and head unit. Replacing the speakers might solve the problem. If not you need a new head unit. The speakers need to be replaced at this point due to age in any event.

If you are getting any sort of signal, I'd say your amp is most likely ok.
Easy stuff to troubleshoot.

1. Remove both speakers and swap. This step will isolate either a bad speaker or bad signal coming to the speaker. Inspect each speaker for a worn out foam surround. Don't be surprised if the foam is mostly missing.

This is a good time to buy new dash speakers! You'll be plesantly surprised what a difference new aftermarket speakers will make. Best thing is, you can find good choices for $35 and up! I updated mine with Polk speakers from Crutchfield last winter ($40 incl. shipping). They sound so much better than stock.

The mounting ring and speaker are integral in the OEM setup. With a Dremel tool and a solder gun its easy to cut off the existing mounting ring any use it and it's connector for an aftermarket speaker. Solder wires from the OEM connector to the speaker tabs. They do have polarity, so make sure they are wired identically to each other. I had to use heat to bend the original speaker connector out of the way and that worked well. I choose Infinity reference speakers because I was at a display with several speaker brands available and the Infinity sounded the best. They were $100.00, and I could have done it for $30.00 but I use them every day and they have additional power handling capability for future upgrades.
