Eccentric steering wheel?

I'm thinking this must be by design, but when you turn the wheel there is an eccentric movement of maybe 1/2 inch from top to bottom.

Last car I knew with this was an 80's Oldmobile--on THAT if was definitely a quality control issue.

I wonder what kind of handing advantage the eccentricity might have? Kind of a pain in AutoX, IMHO.

Both the 3 spoke and 4 spoke wheels are like this. I always thought it was to give you more leg room. Jeff

Thanks. Good to know I don't have a "special" one.
