HELP! Vents only blow hot air.
This just started happening. My climate control only blows hot air no matter what my temperature is set to. Even with the snowflake on. I can hear the A/C compressor kicking on when I turn on the A/C.

This happened to me once. Turns out I forgot my wife was riding with me, offering directions.

If you are audible hearing the AC compressor kick in, and it continues to blow hot air no matter what the temp is set to then you could have a couple different issues. I have had low charge in the AC system still kick on the compressor but not drop the temp. Also have experienced issues with the vent (interior) temp sensor failing. Location I believe is in the grill under the passenger side air vent. Last but not least, I have seen a stretch of climate control units fail unexpectedly, regardless of the compressor audibly turning on.
Food for Though  Hope you dont sweat to death...Oh wait, put the top down :D -Ty |
if you are in my area, you are more then welcome to drop by.
we can charge up the system, and also replace the AC controls, and see if it is in fault. i have an extra control for 00 and up, and the 97-99 from my car. |
Any foam blowing through the vents by any chance? Don't know if that could be the case but I know it can cause lack of heat & AC.

The lack of foam will carouse the HVAC system to be less aficiant, but not to that extant The foam is basically coming from the flaps inside the evaporator box, that at responsible for the air distribution. |
I'm not completely sure, but probably the Boxster has the same 'blend door' setup for its air handling as most other cars. The blend door is exactly what it says it is, it blends cold and hot air from outside and somewhere close to the engine, respectively. The door gets moved by a stepper motor which opens/closes the door depending on the temperature setting.
A malfunction in this system can be because the control of the stepper motor doesn't work anymore, the stepper motor is broken, the arm moving the door is broken or the blend door is stuck. All this stuff is underneath the dashboard somewhere. Turn the contact key on, don't start the engine and listen if you hear something moving when you ride the temperature setting up or down. If you don't hear anything then the system is probably malfunctioning. Now, depending on where this blend door stuff is located this can be fixed for a couple of hundred bucks or over a $1,000. The problem is that in many cars the blend door stuff is located under the dashboard. This means that dashboard has to come out which is as expensive as dropping an engine. I don't know if this is the case for a Boxster. |

You've blown a fuse.
Easy to fix. I had this happen once, but it was an old school Toyota, and they came with spare fuses in those days . . . |
The fan doesn't come on when I only have the key on. However, when the car is running and I change the temp setting, the fan motor speed increased and decreases so apparently the thermostat is working.

Hi, there! Hate to resurrect an old thread, but did you ever figure out what was up with this?
Not 100% sure whether it's the same, but mine just recently went very suddenly to only blowing hot air. Doesn't matter what the temperature is set at, and it's not a low refrigerant issue so far as I know. It's not that it's blowing hair that isn't cold enough anymore, it's that it seems to be staying stuck on the same temperature setting regardless of what is actually set on the controls. And that temperature setting is hella hot. Fan control seems to work fine, and the deflector that moves air to different areas, as in the floorboard or the windshield, seems to also be working fine. I've definitely had foam spitting issues, but those pretty well ceased well before this happened. Thanks! 98 986 |
My mechanic fixed it last year saying that he had to adjust some levers under the dash. Now it’s doing it again so I guess I have to figure out which levers those were.
