First month of ownership.
I have driven every other sports car from mustangs to vettes and a taste of ferrari. The boxster is honestly the best DD sports for someone who doesn't have great roads and a decent budget as a DIY. Except for three things two of which I really need some help with.
1 not speeding is too hard to do 2 I can't tell if I'm low on coolant or not. I noticed I have condensation on the trunk lid and every once in a while I hear a hiss coming from the cap, but when I take the cap off and the pressure escapes, my coolant goes back between min and max lines. So I can't tell if my cap is bad or not. 3 what can cause oil to drip on my exhaust once I pass 5k rpms. City driving I have no oil smell or smoke, but if I start spirited driving, I start a smokescreen and stop to notice black residue on the exhaust and some smoke. Other than that, I think my boxster S is a keeper. |
Preaching to the choir!
1. Get involved with DE or autocross. It will take the edge off and make it easier to drive sanely on the street. 2. Replace the cap with the newest version. It's cheap insurance. If you've got condensation or hissing, something's not right. 3. The oil drip at rpm is from leaking spark plug tubes/ o-rings. Fix that ASAP. |
2 get new newest 04 cap, itīs a cheap insurance
3. maybe your aos is failing, also from where is the leak location? Read up on RMS (Rear Main Seal) which could fail and leak and could be many $$$ congrats on your s |
Oil leak is on the passanger exhaust. If it was in the center I would park the car to do RMS/IMS.

You didn't say what year the car is That may make a difference in the oil leak issue. The S will keep up to and pass many of the Mustangs out the on the track or times in AX. What they have in raw power they compromize in handling the corners and weight. It does sound like you need a DE fix, The bad part is if it bites you it''s a hard habbit to break.

01 S with every option except heated seats
I actually find any mustang under 09 and not a svt chump change. But now every other car that didn't blink an eye at my stang wanting a piece of me. |
1) the 3.2 and the S model scream for fun. I have a 2000 S.
2) it could be the cap, but there is an air release on the reservoir tank that maybe loose. 3) AOS...check the throttle body for oil that will tell that the AOS is starting to fell. |
Well I checked the resevoir tank and got stopped by more plastic bits under the plastic cover. So I'll deal with that later when I get some tools. The oil leak is gonna get checked out by a shop tomorrow since they're gonna be changing the tranny gear oil also. See if it is the AOS or spark plug o rings.
The speed/fun I can probably control if I can just get my girlfriend to get in the passanger seat. Maybe... |
Regarding the coolant issues. +1 on installing the latest coolant cap. Also if you have some time pull out the carpeting in the rear trunk. You may discover some crusty chemical accumulations between the metal of the trunk bed and the carpet. If so, you've got a slow coolant leak likely due from an aging coolant tank.
Replacing the coolant tank can be a DIY repair if you're adventurous, but it is a royal pain in the @$$ reaching around both sides of the dividing wall between the engine bay and the rear trunk. Search the forums for write-ups on this. |
Oh coolant tank and water pump was replaced about a year ago from previous owner ( the invoices I have) so it May be just the cap
