ideas on an interesting sound?

folks,

ive noticed an interesting sound coming from the rear passenger side (while standing outside) near the rear vent in front of the rear wheel.

Its like a rata-tat-tat-tat .. type of sound. For those of you who've been driving for 30 years .... it sounds a bit like the sound of a carburetor in older cars!!

my boxster surely isnt from 1980 ...:)

any ideas?

There is a cooling fan behind the vent...sounds like it is hitting something. When the engine is first started from sitting overnite, do hear hear that sound. Fan will not come on until temperature reaches a certain degree for it to engage.

thanks for ur input.

its not the fan ... cos after engine off .... sometimes the fan stays on (to cool engine) .. and the sound stops ... while the fan is still on.

the vacuum pump

Could be the pump...check the plugs.

anyone have the part number or picture of the "vacuum pump"?

i cant find it on pelicans website.

in fact when i search on the forum for "leaks / vacuum" etc ... everyone seems to use different nomenclature for what part is actually leaking or failing.

So the air injection pump is located near the cooling fan behind the passenger rear vent?

Is it hard to get to? Topside via engine cover or bottom side thru wheel well?

is there anyway to diagnose the fault definitively before actually replacing the part?

Get a nice mechanics stethoscope.

Does the noise change with engine RPM?

well .. found out what the sound was ... (sorta)...

today as I was driving the box ... the engine belt broke (I think thats what it was). The moment it broke .. the engine was purring like a kitten as if it was brand new! :D

so had it towed to my frds shop. its closed today, so will check it out tomorrow with him.

basically what happened .... was driving along .. sound got a bit louder ....

then the sound went away! ..... the battery light came on ... and my AC wasnt cold anymore. Then 5 secs later .... the temp shot up to the top.

the only thing that I believe can cause these 3 conditions at the same time (alternator, AC compressor and water pump) is the engine belt or drive belt or serpentine belt.. whatever u guys choose to call it. cos its the only belt that links all 3 things.

hopefully ... things are ok and the overheat condition wasnt serious.

update u guys later!

Great, because that is an easy fix.
