Plasti Diped my rims

Just finished spraypainting my winter rims, Plasti Dip, matt black. Four layers, first layer was extremely thin and had to cure for a long time.

What do you guys think?

Nice work haz...lots of prep needed by the look of this project, but worth the effort.

Ready for an Oslo winter :)

j.fro 10-19-2013 05:54 AM

Nice work. I've Plasti-dipped mine and I was quite happy with the results. It's an inexpensive, easy, and reversible way to get a different look on the car.

Thanks guys, promise to upload pics after they are on the Box :D

Where did that hardtop come from? That's just what's needed for a Karmann Ghia conversion.

(Not a fan of black rims, myself, but you did a good job on them and should look good on your black car.)

I'm warning you, don't look at this. Because if you do, you'll lie awake at night, trying to figure how to get the money to waste on such a sublime extravagance.

Nice work Haz ...

I will now free up some garage space and store my spare wheels and the tires the Norwegian way ... in the bathroom! :)

Plasti dip

Your rims look GREAT! I recently bought flat black center caps with the intention of doing what you have done....same rims. I have been wrestling with whether to paint or plasti dip. Was there much prep work with plasti dip? Did you repair defects an road rash (if present), or does the plasti dip conceal defects?

Looking forward to more photos.

tanque55 10-20-2013 04:07 AM

They look great, so you were able to do this without taking the
tires off the wheels?

haz 10-20-2013 08:56 AM

SO! I was actually forced to change to winter tires this morning as it was snowing where I was driving to, as I was planning on replacing a bad MAF.

LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT MORE PICS.

At the gas station, making sure I had correct tire pressure. What do you guys run? These are 225, 45, 17 inch rims and my book said the pressure should be 36 psi rear, and 29 in the front.

At my friends garage, he has an awesome 914 which he is restoring for the third time, wide body panels, roll cage and a badass engine.

As you can see, some spacers at the back would suit the stance nicely:

Thank you. Yes the rubber stayed on. I have seen a YT video of one guy, he made sure to apply many coats and was actually able to peel off any Plasti Dip from the side of the wheels.

Not at all. Washed them (see my first post) and then I ran some methylated stuff to make sure they were 100% clean. I did not repair anything and the Plasti Dip concealed any scrathes and curb marks.

Wow. Lost for words.

Looks great! My wheels are already plasti-dipped black but I'm going to try gold and red on my spare set of wheels just to see what they look like.

haz 10-20-2013 10:32 PM

Pics?

By the way, I can already see I need rear spacers. Anyone know where to buy them online? I'm afraid of buying some cheap knock offs.. how about these? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-Boxster-Cayenne-20mm-Hubcentric-Wheel-spacers-and-Tapered-Bolts-5x130-/300900504672

Nine8Six 10-20-2013 10:41 PM

yes, you have a better flare than I do for bad quality. I was telling myself "pffff its only a spacer what can go wrong" but beware, the hub-centric OD on those exact same is off by about 0.5mm. The spacers will move up/down/right/left when installed ;) hilarious, so easy to make and they can't even get it right (really sad and embarrassing)

Got them for $15 here locally.... returned them in a flash.

haz 10-20-2013 10:51 PM

Oh lawd

I coulda told you that :D

What kind of spacers fit my 225, 45, 17 inch rims? Porsche Shop offers everyting from 3 mm to 25 mm: Porsche Wheel Spacer Shim | Wide Track Wheel Offsets | Porsche 6mm Shim 9mm Shim 15mm 25mm Spacer Kits

Nine8Six 10-20-2013 11:06 PM

After complaining, the seller reasoning was:

Well sir, lots of car hubs are rusted so we have to manufacture them a tad larger so they can be installed.

I had to pinch myself thinking I was sleeping/dreaming about this. Not to mention the lug bolts they offer are simply killing units. Those will crack any wheel, if not during installation! When I mention he simply hang-up the phone on me.

We have many Porsche R14 bolts here at the circuit so I had these already. Just needed his spacers. What a saga I tell ya!

Just didn't want to do/turn myself a set of spacer (lazy). get the H&R mate, flawless and cheap cheap
