Chronometer on a 986?
.....well, not exactly, it's just an analog clock. Sorry for the poor quality pictures ;)

I really hope you didn't drill a hole in your dash for that.

a magic 8 ball would be better.
|
Amazing... Your new chronometer shows the exact same time as the stock digital clock.
|
I think it looks pretty cool. Be even cooler if it was backlit.
|
wrap it in the carbon fiber tape?
/ |
Does it glow in the dark?
|
Smh........
|
I just threw up in my mouth a little.
|
LOL... I guess this may end up as my desk clock eventually :ah:
|
Sometimes it's hard for me to hold back from making a wise *ss comment, this is one of those times..........;)
My guess is you were going for the Chrono Package look, if so and you decide to continue to pursue I suggest you find a stopwatch of sorts to insert; http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...ps57cc7aa6.jpg My 2 cents...........It looks hideous and screams wannabe 911 GT3, helluva thing to wannabe though............ |

I still say I like it, but now I'm thinking that maybe using Grandad's mantle clock might not have been the best choice. A more modern clock face, or even a digital display would look a bit more appropriate.
I think you've got a good idea that just needs a bit of tweaking. |

If you do a mod with the intention of asking for comments on how good it is...you did it for the wrong reasons. If you did it because you like it, than go with it and enjoy it. Personally, I would go with an altimeter since you car already has a clock.
|
i got the sport chrono thing too. personally i like the sport chono look and have thought about adding one. what you are looking to add looks a bit bulky; the sport chrono pod (or wart) is a bit more svelte and can be had on ebay but is a bit expensive. i think that the actual sport chrono clock is a complicated affair that is tied i to the car's computer so you'll never replicate that, but note that the sport chrono pod accepts any standard size gauge, so plx multigauges become a (very cool) option - tie into the obd port and can display four types of data with a press. lcd screen so they can be programmed to replicate your stock gauges (or grandpa's watch if you wish). there is a thread on it on *i think* 6 speed if you search.
let me be proud to say that i agree with mark t on this one. |
... and what would be COOLER is some kind of track timer.
right now I use the cms app in my iphone - use a phone holder to mount it to the windshield and it shoots video, records lat and long accel/decel, position on track, track time, splits, etc. automatically starts and stops once speed gets over a set limit, can exchange info via Bluetooth, etc. imagine a cayman wart with an opening in the front for a camera, and a gauge that displays all the above info. dumps the data to your phone/ipad at the end of the run. that would be great. |
All good suggestions... and I'll leave it alone for now
|
ok, then, if you don't mind, i'd like to hijack for a bit.
here's the link to the dyi to install a cayman wart: Bold Mod- Custom Sport Chrono Pod with Multi Gauge - 6speedonline.com Forums doing some research, and harry's iphone lap timer *I think* can process Bluetooth video, obd2 and gps data. so, get a used cayman wart and install a Bluetooth gps and hd webcam in it. get a Bluetooth obd2 reader and wire it all up. as soon as you get in your car, the app should be getting all the info it needs to work, all while sitting in your coat pocket (or console storage or wherever). further, it looks like the harry's lap timer app has the ability to share data realtime with other devices. if we could find a way to share data with a plx multigauge (also installed in the cayman wart) then you could see your lap times, split times, lateral g's, etc., while driving. all in once package. |
Now that's AWESOME!!

Impressive work (and ideas) all along btw |
well, I looked on ebay and I can get a replacement dash cheap ...
I was hoping you'd chime in on this - I need someone who understands this stuff to make it work ... from what I can see so far, there are not a lot of small, Bluetooth/wifi hd cameras around (small enough to fit into a cayman sport chrono pod) which is odd given how damn small an iphone is ... |
yea plenty of those around here. You can get near ya as well
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11418 Also look up the GPS modules, 6-dof sensors, real-time clock, Bluetooth or wifi modules, etc This guy's webby has it all under one roof. Also the open source microcomputer (arduino) would be sufficient to bus the whole package together (I'm guessing, not sure with HD1080i tho). It's all matchbox size so that you are good to go. This guy has it all shielded already. You just need to slam in your GPS and Wifi modules and you are uploading in minutes. Arduino Based Camera |
Sorry not a Bluetooth device ready but easy to 'make' them Comm using other modules (either BT or Wifi) in the design. Research on that open source microcomputer and you'll see that many have done it already.
|
well, that is the ticket. I was hoping to be able to just plug some stand-alone components together, but I have an amigo who builds helicopters that use all this stuff (his primary unit is actually called 'ardi') so i'll see what he can put together for me. would still have to work with the harry app to talk to the plx device, so will have to talk to those vendors as well ...

If you two needs any help just hit me mate
Once your design and product is out, get a web server on one of those superfast SoCal backbone and built a website (e.g. follow me fast DOT com). On the wart, add a "Click to Upload LIVE feed" button on the façade. The Wifi Cam feeds can easily be uploaded online on that same web server (by FTP protocol) using the iPhone data network. I would be pleased to watch you guys having a track day LIVE from this end ;) |
|
I think it would look super classy to have a small, tasteful, and intricate looking analog clock integrated into the dash (not on it ;) ).
|
Your first project should be to ditch the stock orange interior lights :D
|
Got rid of the chrome trim with some quick 4D CF wrap... as you can see I still have it on my dash

Looks cool but it have this nasty levitation effect to it.
Can you please install a rubber seal/trim under it so it doesn't look as if it will fall off the dash on accel. Plenty of those in any size on eBay (small 1mm up to door seal/trims sizes) |
