2009+ cars holding value?
 

I know many 986 owners sometimes look at the 2009+ cars as an upgrade path.

I've noticed prices have been very high across the board and not too heavy depreciation. Heck, getting a Pdk Boxster or Cayman is easily in the mid 30's for a 4-5 year old car - and the 981 cars don't seem nearly as having as big a gap in price as most newer cars do.


Plus not too much inventory, hard to find S cars. Anyone else took a look recently?

Good question Rondo. I feel exactly the same way as I have said in your other thread. I feel less afraid of a 2007 or 2008 Cayman/Boxster now because 2009 and newer are too much $$$. I am not in a hurry to make that jump right now because I know what I have with my 2001 Box base. It has no issues.

I believe that the 2009 and newer will sell at a premium because they have no IMS but that may be over rated because they are still used cars although there may be other issues still.

Currently in the Edmonton area for private sale are a 2007 Cayman base for sale - 50k miles for $32k and a 2008 Cayman with 30k miles for $40k. Tempting but I don't want to park an extra car in the driveway as the garage only holds 2 cars. My Box will likely sell in spring but if these two cars were at the Porsche stealership I likely would have made a deal by now.....

I do like value for $$$ and like to balance minimal risk without putting out too much $$ for a used car. Yes Rondo good topic.:)

They will start falling soon. The 09+'s are now coming out of warranty and they are joining a very very saturated market for Porsches.

The only thing helping them is the low production numbers due to the 2009 credit crunch.
With Porsches its all about limited production, if you don't have that your car will eventually be worth only its engine.

That means if I own a 09+ and don't wish to keep it long-term, I'm selling now before the second drop in value sets in.

That is true - Porsche sold considerably less cars during that economic recession, which in turn means a lot less to choose from now. It is also perhaps bad timing that the 2009's were the first cars with PDK, which makes them more desirable as technology has been going that way recently in lieu of manual cars.

^ I would not touch an out-of-warranty PDK car with a 10 foot pole. That is strictly extended warranty equipment in my book. It's going to be a while before the average independent Porsche specialist is up to speed and who knows how 'wrenchable' those trans are in the first place. You might be better off getting one whole from a parted out wreck.

I couldn't agree more. The complexity of the PDK makes the fuel injection system look like a carburetor. If you're not an expert in digital mechanical control systems, you'll be paying big $$$$ to someone who is.

that is why i went with a 996 . the DI cars are holding their values well and boxster , cayman S models are hard to find vs. 911's . non DI 997's are holding well too, 987 cars are reasonable .

Excuse my ignorance but what does mean DI car ?

Direct Injection - a new fangled fuel injection that was introduced in 2009 on the S model Boxster and Caymans. IIRC DI was introduced on base models in 2010. DI gives you better hp and mpgs vs FI (how many acronyms can I put in 1 sentence?).

So you guys think the next big dip for 2009 or so cars should be coming up soon due to them finishing the 4 year warranty around this time?

If production numbers were high it would be a sure bet. But since they're very low it remains to be seen how quickly it will happen. There are many pros that it will low rates, more lending, strong new sales (people dumping their 09's). And frankly the average Porsche buyer doesn't know DFI from DFW. The merits of the engine build are not as important to them as mileage/options.
