noob needs bolts
Want to buy new wheel bolts for my 2001 986S
It has the nice Sports design wheels :) the bolts are ugly and old, I dont have the spare time to clean and spray! New bolts! Which to buy? I am not sure what length.... the ones on there are 60mm end to end (literally tip to tip) , the actual thread is about 20mm I have no idea which to get. this web site describes 'standard length' and '19mm head' but not sure. I just sprung for a set of McGard ( black ) on ebay yesterday. A bit pricey @ $140 but it comes with security lock .. is known to be of high quality .. and not much more than the generics on eBay for a set of 20.
If you want to get replacement OEM, I think Suncoast has them for $8 / pc. |
my question though is length?
|
looking at pix I think mine are standard length
|
Do you have a spacer or reason to need non stock length ?
If not, these will work for you ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/390644746518?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p398 4.m1439.l2649 ) .. all measurements are listed there and match stock. |
they are nice. you think these are the same (as I am in UK so these are from UK shop).
BTW I have Sports design wheels. I have no idea about spacers. i took a bolt off front and rear. they are same length. that is 20mm of thread, and 60mm in length tip to tip. They have big cone type shaped washer thingies built in 16 BLACK PORSCHE WHEEL BOLTS PLUS MCGARD BLACK LOCK SET 37MM | eBay |
ECS Tuning sells some, including extended length.
I got 4 new ones to replace my locking ones, and got them from Amazon :) If you have measured your old ones, then you should get new ones the same size. ECS Tuning lists the lengths on the different ones they sell. You could also paint them, there are a couple of threads on here where folks have used VHT Silver Caliper Paint to paint them and it looks really good. I have a can of the paint but haven't gotten around to it yet... steve |
37mm seems too long .. the length after the R14 seat should be around 28mm.
OEM Porsche rims do not need spacers. Usually is for fitment of aggresive looking after market wheels. Edit: reading your original post, the 19mm "head" refers the the hexagon nut area .. basically the size of the socket needed to put the bolt on .. not how it will fit your car. |
I think these are the ones (45mm)

Be careful with those McGard locks. I had the chrome version and upon second installation (about 2 months after initial)...

By looks of it the stem was never properly pressed (nor could have been based on the aftermath). I was skeptical of their "cap" design lock bolts from start but thought hey it's McGard. After accusing me of using air tools on them (in spite of me not owning a compressor and my manual torque wrench in a few pix I submitted) they reluctantly offered to replace the lock bolts. Needless to say, I declined... |
Ouch .. how did you end up getting the stem out after the head broke off ?
|
I was able to get the wheel off after removing all the other bolts and then it simply unscrewed by hand.
FWIW, they have a 17mm hex head, not OEM 19mm just so you know when they arrive... Hope you have better luck w/ yours :) |
tomc88,
If you are in the UK, try DESIGN911UK located in Hainault, Essex sales@design911.com They have SS wheel bolts in standard and extended lengths - I've had mine on for 3 years now and no sign of rust or pitting. They post the same day - good company to deal with.... |
Thanks .. no offense but I hope yours was a one off bad batch. Figures my other option was $90 for 2x set of ebay made in china ones .. and no security .. its worth a shot. If only OEM bolts came in black.
