Boxster radiator sizes for fitment into early 912/911
 

Hi guys,

I currently own an early 912 and looking to install a set of Boxster radiators in the front to cool off my water cooled engine. Im looking to find info if guys have tried this or fitted them up front before. I really want to know the exact specs or borrow one for a little while and see if it will fit or not. If you can measure it out for me and I can make my own prop out of cardboard, that may work as well for the time being. Id rather not buy them until I know they will work of course. Otherwise I need to look at new options!

Yeah those water cooled 912 can be a ********************. Not many of those around. Most seem to be air cooled
But otherwise should be easy: the fronts of a 912 and a 986 basically look the same, sometimes I wonder when I see one: is this a 1967 912 or a 2001 986 :-)

You will have a hard time making them fit if you want to try and do it the same way as it is done in the Boxster. I have a Boxster race car and a 1978 911SC, and there is much more space under the front fenders in the Boxster for the radiators than in the 912/911.

You might be able to mount them in the same way as it is done in the 996 RSR.

Not being an arse - I'd love to see pics of how the M96 engine/trans was swapped into the early 912.

Well im prepping my car for a Subaru STi motor actually and believe that the three radiator setup from a boxster may work great for it. My friend has already done the swap but cut out the front tub to place a large Ron Davis Radiator there. Im hoping not to cut anything and maybe modify the radiators to work accordingly. The 3 radiator setup looks like it will be sufficient too.

I have followed the great PVX thread on Pelican, been there for years (Kroggers there as well)...

I wonder if the 996 RSR set-up would work on a 912? The radiators are mounted differently and might fit if you can figure out the exhaust part...

I didnt think about the 996, that may be possible. Are you mounting fans on that assembly too or just free flow air? Since you got the radiators already, can you get some quick dimensions for me by chance? With some special front bumper work along with some good mounting brackets, I bet these could fit....

No, there will not be any fans on my Boxster, removed them some time back.

Ah, that makes sense then with the fitment, no fans, only ducts.

No rush at all on the radiators. Just figured since you actually have them AND got them visible, it was a great favor to ask to take some measurements! I will end up making some mock up cardboard samples for fitment into mine. There isnt any rush though.....

So what engine is in your 912?

perhaps have a look at elephant racing and mimic what they do with oil coolers - one in each fender and a centre-mount. perhaps you could even use oil coolers? if you check the Subaru conversion thread here, the three stock rads provided too much cooling and the centre one had to be blocked off.

Interesting. Now you got me thinking. How about 2x BMW K1200 radiators with fans in the fenders along with a center radiator? The sizes look pretty good and along with the center rad it could possibly work.

BigSmoothlee - currently I have the 4 cyl 912 motor in it. Its an industrial motor with towards marine application (originally for the Porsche Boat in 60's). It has like 40hp and runs like an early vw bug.

Thats pretty rare, but it makes something like 50 horsepower less than a regular 912. Good luck with your project:cheers:

Ok, from what I can tell, the 911/996 radiators are 340x358x34mm --> 13.3x14.1x1.3" and the center radiator is 24x4.6x1.6". Anyone able to confirm these two? Again, just looking for rough estimates like 13x14x1 and 24x5x1.5...


PVX build has 2 radiators that are 9x16 x2-3? with fans and does well. He doesnt even have a center radiator and does ok without it, but the custom rad's are pricey.

The motorcycle radiators look too small to use and am now leaning towards mini cooper radiators - 10x10x1.6" along with a center radiator which would replicate the 996 for a fraction of the price with fans.
