Oil Analysis

Woo Hoo! Just got my oil analysis from Blackstone Labs. Here is the summary:

"BRUCE: We really like the looks of this Boxster at 70,000 miles. Wear metals are so low that we wouldn't

have believed this oil had 5,000 miles on it had you not told us. Most of the wear metals are lower than

universal averages and those show typical wear levels for this type of engine after about 3,700 miles on the

oil. Granted, chrome is 1 ppm higher than average, but 1 ppm overall still isn't bad. The viscosity was a tad

thin for 5W/40, more in the 10W/30 range, but that's not a problem. No fuel or coolant was found. Great

report here. Keep up the good work."

Very happy with the results! Every thing was spot on what the averages should be. It gives me a little peace of mind but I still plan to do the IMS at some point. No to go wash and polish her and then go for a spirited drive:cheers:

Thanks Guys!

Good news indeed.

Great news for you man! :)

Finally sent off a sample of used oil to Blackstone and got the lab report today.

"TOM: This is a really nice report from your Boxster. There's nothing out of line in this sample at all, and no contamination was found. Universal averages show typical wear for the Porsche 2.5L engine after about 5,000 miles on the oil. You ran a little longer, yet your metals are all fine compared to averages, showing no evidence of poor wear or other mechanical problems. No coolant, moisture, fuel, or excess silicon (which can be abrasive dirt) was found, and insolubles were low showing no combustion/oil filtration problems. Great report! Solid engine!"

At the last oil change, there was no sign of metal in the filter (WIX 51042 spin on), but there was just the slightest bit of metal dust on the magnetic drain plug. A positive lab report sure puts one's mind at ease. :D

Keep doing them. Good job. But one report does not tell the whole story. It's just your base-line. Post the whole report here. Thanks.

Wow, that was a lot of positive feedback for an oil analysis - I'm surprised that they didn't say something about how you've lost weight recently. :)

Looks like everything that my one-a-day vitamins have in them.

Maybe I should just take a shot glass of used motor oil everyday instead.

How do metal flakes etc show up since they are not disolved in solution typically?

Flavor 987S 03-05-2014 01:41 PM

Oxford, thanks for posting the full report. That does look good, as I compare to my old UOA's.

One thing you can see, is how the Mobil 0W40 shears down, both by the SUS Visc. and the cSt Visc. Both are on the low end. That's one of the rubs with Mobil from people like Jake and Charles. At least your Zinc and Phos are at decent levels. I think you'd see better results in your UOA with Mobil 5W50. or Joe Gibbs DT40 5W40.

I agree, especially living in the hotbox known as Dallas. Considering Castrol 5W40 for the next change, which seem to come up quickly.

Sure. I don't. But people like Jake and Charles do. It's called a VOA (virgin oil analysis).

They don't show up in UOA's, that why you need to inspect the oil filter, get a magnetic drain plug and periodically drop the sump plate to see whats in there and check for metal or other debris.
