Boxster used retail prices

I was curious if there were any particular model years that were more in demand creating peaks and valleys in used car prices that could be expoited by a car shopper. I do not see quite as much early onset depreciation as I expected. I also thought there might be more fluctuation around the 986/987 model change.

Interesting chart, prices are quite flat from 1997-2002

Are the retail prices based on base models? I wonder what the differences are if it was priced for the S?

Yes, Base model. The S options throw in a few more varibles so I didn't think it would be as "clean".

Think it's worth noting the graph shows no particular premium for the 9A1 engine.

People are constantly going on about how the M96/7 issues have done for 986 and 996 values. But i think that's bollocks. And that graph proves it. There's no exceptional step up for the 987.2. Just a normal premium you'd expect for a slightly newer car.

Resale has little to do with the mechanical merits of the car (excluding mileage) and much more to do with supply. This chart should have a second line indicating total production by year or number of used sales by year. And if possible the average mileage of each model year when sold.

Also those prices don't reflect what I've seen on retail sites like Auto trader for m97 vs 9A1. There's a much bigger gap between in warranty and off warrant cars.

I looked at Autotrader too. There is some variation in the numbers that didn't make sense to me.

For the Kelley prices, how much did you increase miles as the cars got each year older?

I used Kelley's average miles for a model in "excellent" condition. Seems much higher than the actual milage on available used boxsters.
