Rear fog lights

I noticed only the rear right fog light lights up on my 2001 S.

Is this the same with everyone?

I noticed on other brands of cars only the right hand side lights up as well.

If only the right side is meant to light up can anyone explain why there is a blank and bulb for a light on the left hand side?

Both of them light up on my 2002 Boxster S.

If both your lights work then someone wired the second light to work, because it does not come that way.

Why is there a bulb in a socket when there is no power to the socket? Never seen this "extra" bulb on a US car. On the German and UK boards I have seen reports that their cars come with this extra bulb. They treat it as a spare bulb.

Why there is a socket that does not work is simple. Porsche can use one bulb holder for the world and depending on LHD/RHD there can or cannot be power to the socket depending on how the car is wired.

Steven:

Here is an excellent explaination about rear fog lights from Jim (MNBoxster):

Hi,

Something to realize about the Fog Lights on the Porsche. Their purpose is not to allow you to see better. Rather, they are there to allow you to be seen better by other Drivers.

Also, with respect to Rear Fog Lights, they are always located on the Passing side of the Car - Left for LHD Countries and Right for RHD Countries. This way, the Driver behind you knows to pass you toward the Center of the Road as opposed to a Pass on the Shoulder. There is no Fog Light on the Right Side of US Market Cars. Hope this helps...

Happy Motoring!...Jim'99
