Clutch pedal 'gritty'

Hi guys, long time lurker, and potential buyer. I went to drive one today and it was all ok except for a gritty feeling when pushing the clutch in. It clicks lightly probably 9-10 times throughout a depression of the pedal, and again upon releasing the pedal. It almost feels like its a gummed up cable that the pedal is pulling. I'm new to the boxster so I don't know enough about what it could be. Any ideas? Is it the master cylinder failing or just something that needs to be lubed? When the pedal is actuating, the sound is pronounced at the pedal location and at the clutch fork area.

Thanks

Could be master cylinder, slave cylinder, or throw out bearing. Or a really, really dirty clutch pedal pivot!

A good shop should be able to address this and anything else of concern during the pre-purchase inspection. You're getting a PPI, right?

Well I walked away for the night as I didn't want to risk it. How much are PPIs normally?

Sorry, forgot to mention, 1997 boxster with 78k miles.

This year doesn't have a cable clutch, does it?
