As for my own experience, I was in an accident with my other car where someone clips my rear side bumper while he was merging. Without the video clip it's hard to proof whether I merged into him or he merged into me, so before I email the clip to the insurance company they were going to settle as 50/50 as there is the "No Fault" law in NY and I would have lost $500 deductible for a $1,100 repair. Dash cams are so popular in Asia and Russia, you never know what you'll catch while driving, just search YouTube. I installed dash cams on every car I owned for those "just in case" moments. ;)

What length of recording time does it have? Sounds like it would be good not only when you were driving, but also for those parking lot bumps when you were out of the car.

I just installed a BlackVue DR400G-HD II Season 2 Car Black Box Drive GPS Recorder in my BMW. It was $270 on eBay. It does not have a rear camera or video monitor. It is small though, has lots of options and the video playback is great. They have a DR500 model that is only $30 more and has Wi-Fi. It is a tad larger though.

It all depends on the size of the micro SD card you insert. In any case, it'll record forever as it just overwrites the old file and since the Boxster's cigarette socket always has power even after key removal, therefore it'll continue to record while you are away, but just be careful with the car battery level.
