P1128 check engine light code

Hi fellas, my car's been getting a check engine light on and off now for a P1128 bank 1 system too lean but only 1 code. Usually it would go with a P1130 but not this time. I took out the MAF and cleaned it with MAF cleaner spray, put it back, reset the computer and all was good for a month. Yesterday, it came back on, same P1128. I'm looking for a new MAF sensor but notice there seems to be 2 types for this 2001 986.

MAF with or without electronic throttle? How can I find out which type my car uses? Should I change the oxygen sensors too while I'm at it? How many O2 sensors are there in a 2001 2.7 engine (2 or 4)? I didn't see any air leaks when I was in there.

thanks,

Mike

Hi,

If you have a 2001 then you have the e-gas and not the wire throttle.

There are several revisions of the MAF for e-gas, and if you had a 2000 there would be a chance that you had the earlier one. For 2001, you have the most recent revision. This article from Pelican Parts 101 Projects for your Boxster has a breakdown and also a link to order the correct one.

If you determine that you need to replace your MAF, then this article will help you to figure out the correct one.

Thank you Steve, just the info I was looking for. My car just hit 36k miles, so I will get a new MAF sensor and see what happens. Maybe change the O2 sensors later as these are all fairly easy to do myself.

Best

How can I tell which MAF sensor I have? I have a 2000 so it could be either...

Remove the mass air flow sensor. If it is original, the Porsche part number is printed on it.

Is there a DIY guide? I am not very mechanically inclined...

The link Steve provided in Post #2 also has instructions. Very easy to do but you do require the T-20 tamperproof bit
