Temperature sensor

I cleaned my radiators this weekend, and I was looking at the grille-mounted temperature sensor. I do not have the OBC activated, so I do not have an ambient temp readout in the bottom of a gauge, but I was wondering if this sensor also supplies the temp to the ECU, for what are probably emissions reasons. As in, in very cold ambient temps, the ECU keeps the high idle longer to warm up the cats sooner.

Anyone know if it would be a Very Bad Idea to snip the wires and remove the sensor?
