If you are on a budget, the Porsche M030 package is a killer deal - shocks, springs & roll bar in one kit.
If you are more affluant and would like to lower your car and adjust the damping, then the Bilstein PSS9 shock / spring kit is very good.

The best would be AST, Motion Control Suspension, Moton, or JRZ. It seems the same Dutch guys move around at all of these companies, so they are pretty much the same IMHO.

Technically they are all "struts" rather than shocks on P-cars. One big difference is the diameter of the chrome shaft sticking out the top. The high end struts will have a shaft that barely fits into the lower sleeve. This is an advantage as the strut positions the wheel on a McPherson / Chapman strut design. I don't think the PSS9's "measure up" in this, or other ways.

Lots of choices. You just need to decide what you want to accomplish and how much you want to spend:

Evasive Motorsports | PH: 626.336.3400 Mon-Fri, 9am-6pm PST: Moton 3 Way Pro Adjustable Coilovers - Porsche Boxster / Boxster S

Exactly - over $8,000 for suspension in a 986 is somewhat over the top... the car would not respond well to racetrack suspension.

That's why I replied to the OP either MO30 or PSS9 would be the way to go, especially for a 10 + year old car.

If your roads suck. Keep it stock. A harder suspension will only triple the rattles, things come loose, break, etc..

It depends on his goals. As a street/DE car I agree with you. If he wants the "best" because he is developing the car to run in the Grand Am Continental Tire Challenge Series and has unlimited financial backing then he might make different choices. At this point we don't know his intended use at all. Only that he wants "the best".
