986/996 dilemma
 

Well, I just pulled the plug on a 02 996. Love it but don't know what to do. Garage space is really tight with a 986, 996 and 2 dds. I managed to fit 4 cars in 3 car garage but I had to get out of the last car from the trunk. Logic says sell the 986 but my heart still can't let it go. After all the stuffs that put in it; new suspensions, glass top, new clutch, LN IMS, AOS, engine mount and water pump in the last 2 years. Boxster is a great car but can't see myself to use it as a dd. Same thing with 996.
Wife is okay on keeping both but I have to park my dd outside (not preferable). Winter can be pretty harsh. Wife's dd must stay in the garage or I have to scrape the snows for her every morning.

My garage is not tall enough to justify a lift. Urghhh... what do you think I should do....

Idea-Do the monthly storage facility thing on your new 996.

Before you spend any money on it in resto/repairs,you will see if you really like it as much as your Box AND if you wish to continue paying the monthly storage fee.

Be sure to get one large enough to place your other car while you are out in your 996.This can be a 2 or 3 month "test drive".

What is very reasonable?

Can you give me the detail on your lift? How much does it cost and how sturdy is it? Can you put both cars stacked within top up? Sounds like a promising solution. Storage in here usually cost around $120 a month and winter might last 6 months. That does not make financial sense to spend $720 to store it (more than my insurance and my insurance is going to charge me more if the car is not parked at home).

I have the same problem after buying a 996 and having my old Boxster built into a Spec Boxster racecar.

Around my area, car storage is $150-$200 per month.

My solution is definitely a lift. I am having one installed in the next two weeks. You can fit a Boxster (50") and a 996 coupe (52") in 9ft height. This includes the 4" thickness of the lift treads and another 2" to allow the lift to raise up to unlock the safety locks.

The lift I am buying costs $1,695. Delivery and full professional installation is ~$600 (of course, delivery charges will vary depending on your location).

The lift will pay back in 12-18 months. Even my wife couldn't disagree with this!

Holy crap, that's cheaper than a set of xenon headlights. No brainer. I want one.

Do these have Maintainance capability...?

Can the centre panel be removed for access..any beams in the way?

The center panels on a four post lift can be removed for easy access underneath the car. Also, a sliding jack can be used to raise the wheels for suspension/brake/tire maintenance/repairs. In the lower pic, the sliding jack is shown under the front after lifting the rear and using jack stands. This gets all four wheels in the air for service at a comfortable work height.
