Recovering a Shift knob

Has anyone successfully recovered the leather material on their shift knob? My shift knob was very worn, and torn from the previous owners rings I would guess. The entire right side of the knob was worn down to the wood and had some sharp edges.

While the car is apart I removed the shift knob and took it down to the wood, and I am now thinking about attempting to recovering it in leather since the red leather interior pieces are impossible to find....or extremely expensive.

Has anyone done this? What methods did you find work best?

Wood? You must have a different shifter.

Mine is the original knob that came with a 01 S in red leather. It looks slightly different- I will post a picture tomorrow. The knob is wrapped (was wrapped) in leather and then has the silver center section, but the top has a round circle that looks to be removable. No black at all except for the filler for the R-6 patter

hey Wilson, have you seen the 997 Gt2 shifter in the Suncoast web page? It's available with red stitching and is only about $250. The bottom 'ring' is different than a 986/996 and would have to be switched with the old one. An option.
