Is this a repaint job or an actual factory color? |
That is a factory paint available for only one year. The car was for sale on ppbb I beleive.

I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.....

wow, that is ugly.

Some people just want to be different, and go to great extremes to achieve this and to be noticed. Personally, I like the traditional colors for these great cars. Give me red, black, silver, yellow, green etc, anytime. The Boxster/Boxster "S" is one of the most beautiful cars in the world (IMO), and does not need to be painted with an exotic color to be admired by almost everyone.

The owner says that is only 1 of 14 1997 boxsters imported to the states with that color. If that is true it certainly is a rare color. I know I've never seen it before. It looks similar to a blue BMW put on some E46 M3's.

There were 5 standard (no addt'l cost) colors in '97, only one of which, Blue Turquoise, is even close to the Ebay car. Additionally, there were 5 optional colors (about $1,000 extra, as I recall), all of them metallics.
Anything else would have been a special order color at about $3k extra. Whoever ordered that car really wanted that color. It appears to be something on the order of "Gulf Blue", the color worn by the Gulf Oil sponsored Porsche 917s from the early '70s. The Porsche 914 of the same period also had a similar color. Also, about every other MGA produced during the '50s and early '60s wore that color, at the time called "Iris Blue". Definately not everybody's pick for a color, but there is one running around my area, and I don't think it looks that bad. |
Oops. Guess I should have read the Ebay ad a little more carefully. It says the color is "Blue Turquoise", a standard '97 color. The color in the picture didn't match very well with the color sample in the '97 doc I was looking at.

I've seen other P-cars in that color. I believe RUF has a 996 TT that appeared in many magazines. There is also a split pea green and tangerine orange that you could have requested for you Boxster.

Blue turquoise was a standard color when the Boxster first came out. In fact it was also a color also used on the 911/993 series. It is not a metallic paint. The optional colors were all metallics.
I have the Boxster and Boxster/993 brochures from 1996. Back then the old air coooled 1997 993 was being sold next to the new water cooled 1997 Boxster. Ronzi is correct. There were 5 standard no cost colors back then, including blue turquoise. I have seen it before in person but I cannot remember on what car. I do not have time to look at my publications to verify if it was only for model year 1997. |
