Help, My Wife wants a Boxster
Yup, just like the title says... My wife has a new found fascination the the Boxster lately... Before I set out on the quest for one, anything about them I should know about that would push me either way towards a decision? Any advise would be helpful....

Buy two of them. Once you drive it she will be upset that you are taking it all the time for those 5 min trips to the store and coming back a couple of hours later. An S model for you and a base for her.
Seriously, read this forum deeply. It has all already been said. |
Check out this website. It will answer most of your questions

I suggest, when you find a year/model you are interested in, come back here and list the details. Or provide a link, if possible. Most here are very knowledgeable about the older models (986/987). If you are thinking new (981), I suggest looking at a different forum as those will be more in tune with the updated features, etc.
Good luck! |
Of course she does! Smart woman! :D
The only problem with that is after she gets one, you'll want a Porsche too! Tell us what your budget is, and we can help you from there. The 2009 is the first year for no IMS (as I understand it), and they have a cushy interior which is very nice. It's also the first year for the PDK (as opposed to Tiptronic) if your wife is inclined toward an automatic. |
Yup, your going to need one with a PDK for her, so YOU can also have some fun.
Also, and most importantly, BOTH of you go do the Porsche Performance driving school (You can share one car for the course). It will make good Porsche drivers out of you and keep you both out of trouble and driving the car the way it should be driven. Ask anyone thats gone, its well worth it, not expensive, great fun, and you'll make some new friends. Then start saving for yours, as it won't be long before you need one too, but the S model. (You'll probably make that decision right after your course) |
Every man should be so lucky that his wife wants a Boxster.
Or, every man should be so lucky that his girlfriend wants a Boxster. Every man should be so lucky that these 2 women never meet each other. |
Tell her no, otherwise she will be perpetuating the myth that the Boxster is a "girls car". :D
Seriously though, there is a ton of info to glean of this site. They are great cars, and the only problem I think you will have is that once she gets one, she will always be angry that you are driving it! |
Are both of you aware of the upkeep costs and maintenance to daily drive one of these? It seems based on my short-term ownership that while you can stack the miles on reliably, you will be replacing tires, getting expensive oil changes, etc., and replacing the clutch earlier than a lot of cars. Repairs are big ticket items in a majority of cases. It's a real sports car, and definitely a "real Porsche." It seems like with most German cars, a bit of luck probably holds most of the most weight when evaluating ownership experience long-term. Lots of happy, and some unhappy, owners.
Have you considered a NC (2006+) miata? It's not a porsche, but it's damn fun and you will sleep better at night. |
Be careful. This is how I ended up with two Boxsters. My wife wanted one but had to be an auto. Loved it but I still had the itch for a manual. A few years later we bought the second one with a manual. What a blast.
