Hi Topless,

Is there a site for more details on the country club event? I'm likely to be in the area at that time and I'd love to stop by. :)

I'll be the guy in the Porsche hat. :)

Actually, I plan to drive Lil Red and I am often enlisted to MC the announcements and give away free raffle Porsche swag. If I think of it I'll give a shout out to 986Forum members. Here is a pic from a drivers meeting at Fontana. I am the dude in the middle with hat, glasses in shirt, and vivid hand gestures. It must have been a good story...

This is the view of Topless that most of the rest of us are used to.... him driving away leaving us in the dust (or water spray).

Sorry I didn't see your post til now. Missed it.

These monthly breakfast meetings are always open to the public. You don't have to be a PCA member or a member of the region. Just come and hang out. If you sign in you get a raffle ticket for door prizes (Porsche swag). Maybe we'll see you next month. See the link below for details, address, map etc.

Topless,
Sorry that I miss you guys, but I returned from a long business trip to Japan and it seems that I have not recovered from the time change yet.
But I wanted to ask you to please drive my car and get your opinion on the noise coming from the differential...
I am looking forward to meet you guys next month, Lakewood it's fairly close to Yorba Linda..

Thank you for the invite, Topless!! I had a great time!

Everyone was so friendly and the turnout was awesome! I'm looking forward to future events. Btw: LOVED your fantastic red Boxster. I'd love to have one of those one day! Looking forward to a DE with you guys!

adream8 06-02-2013 10:57 AM

Thank you for the responses, guys!

Especially thanks to Topless, thstone, and cas951 for reaching out. Very kind of you.

Sorry I missed the gathering, Topless. I've been jamming with work the past few days and didn't get to check the thread. But I will try to make the next one. Thanks for the invite!

thstone, I will PM you, thank you.

cas951, I'm in West Hollywood, but I wouldn't mind making the trek down to MB once in a while to tinker.

Here's my current deal -- 2003 Boxster S, 78K, running well, always kept it really well maintained (all scheduled maintenance, new RMS, brakes, clutch, CV joints, axel boots -- might do the IMS bearing upgrade at 90k+ during the next clutch swap, etc..), and thus far more or less let my independent P specialists take care of everything. But now that I'm up around the 70s, I'd like to start doing some of the maintenance myself, especially the easier stuff. Both to save some dough and have the satisfaction of learning a few things!

Some experience working on other cars, but not a ton. Maybe intermediate level DIYer. About to do all the 75K minor maintenance myself -- oil change, air filters, inspection, etc. -- but figured it couldn't hurt to check in and/or do it in the company of other Boxster peeps to keep me from screwing up to badly..

Also have a P0171 and P0174 CEL that just went off -- lean on both banks, so have to get to the bottom of that. My first CEL!

Web research indicates most probable causes (in order):

vacuum leak (could use help finding it!)
MAF sensor
poor fuel delivery
fuel injectors

.. and NOT 02 sensors, as BOTH banks are indicating lean simultaneously (proofed out).

So I was gonna start by changing the air filter, cleaning the MAF, and searching for an air leak (probably hardest part for me, as I'm still learning the intake system anatomy).

So far I've read about checking the crankcase vacuum by removing the oil filler cap at idle, checking the intake vacuum by removing/pinching various hoses and using the "propane trick", and of course.. using a smoke machine.. which I don't own.

But ANY and ALL help/advice is appreciated, in person or otherwise.

Willing to get together with anyone and also assist on your projects/problems.

Thanks gents! Very cool. :)

-Anthony

Strange, P0171 and P0174 aren't typical Porsche CEL codes. What did you read them with? They are very generic codes that Porsche doesn't typically trigger. I wander if your code reader was wrong? I would post the information into a new posting so others see it. According to my OBDII manual, 171 isn't listed, 174 is listed but refers to other codes and says perhaps cam shaft adjustment needs to be performed. Usually codes are more specific about what is wrong.

adream8 06-05-2013 10:18 AM

Found the problem, guys!

It was the AOS. It's diaphragm had begun to tear. Was sucking air into intake and creating a strong crankcase vacuum, substantially above what it should have been. Could barely budge the oil filler cap when the car was running.

Fortunately (and amazingly) there was no oil yet in the intake, so I was safe. And lucky.

Replaced the AOS, and now all the parameters (including fuel trim) are back within spec and the car is running perfectly. DO notice a difference in performance.

Figured I'd post, just in case it might help anyone else down the line.

Now I just have to change the oil and swap the engine mount out, and she'll be all fixed up.

Still open to getting together, if anyone's down..

These two jobs are fairly easy. But it could be fun to work with others.

And I can help with your jobs..

Let me know..

Cheers.

- Anthony

Oh, and cbracer..

They are generic OBDII codes. But I don't think they're uncommon. Those two are all my Boxster threw.

Code P0171 = lean on bank 1
Code P0174 = lean on bank 2

Here's some good general info:

OBD II Code P0171 and P0174

Cheers.
