Scream noise when starts up HELP!

Hi guys

On my 97' boxster, when I start it up it makes this sudden scream noise. It doesn't happen very often, probably 1 in every 10 start ups. It goes for around 1 second but it's a high pitched 'VVVVV' type of noise.

Also my temperature gauge is normal, but the red heat side flashes every now and them also during when I drive, it also happens 1 in every 7 start ups. I have topped up my coolant tank and it seems to be the right level and hasn't moved. Anyone know what the problem is??? Getting a bit worried about the well being of my beloved Porsche.

Cheers. From Australia

If it sounds like "Ewwwwwwww!", then the starter bendix drive is not disengaging -- my car did same. Squirt some lithium grease in there.

If it sounds like"thwacka thawacka thwacka", it's a cam chain pretensioner spring that's not strong enough -- replace with new spring or live with it -- only an issue when starting and oil pressure is zero.
