Updated Coolant Cap

I'm a new Boxster owner - and really appreciate all of the great info on this forum.

I read about an updated version of the coolant cap (996 106 447 04), so I decided to replace the stock one in my car (996 106 447 00). I was getting a slight smell of coolant in the trunk and I could also hear a slight hiss/gurgle sound if I put my ear to the cap once the car was fully warmed up.

Here are some pictures for comparison in case anyone wants to see how the new cap has been improved... The old version is on the right.

Hopefully this update helped to avoid a trunk full of coolant!

I bought a replacement cap from ******************************** AZ. It looks exactly like the updated cap but just black in color. Anyone see or use one like that?

I haven't actually seen a black one yet, but it just depends who makes their parts at the time. I come across a couple of the 04 caps now that leak and don't seal properly... In each case I put the old cap back on without issues. My personal opinion is don't change the cap just because of the newer part number... if the old one works and doesn't leak... keep using it. The likelihood of the tank leaking seems to be greater than the cap (from what I've seen)

Goes back to that good old saying, "if it aint broke don't fix it"
