Too many miles? 2001 boxster s.. Please help
 

Hi all. Looking to purchase my first boxster but I'm not sure if it's too many miles.

2001 boxster s 80000 miles or 134000 km. It's had regular service history.

Previous owner just recently replaced it's ims bearing , reconditioned tiptronic gearbox, brakes ooverhauled, suspension replaced.

I'm just scared I'llonly get another 30000 miles before the engine dies bbut I'd really love one!

Advice greatly appreciated.

80,000 isn't bad, depending on the price of course(ims replaced is a big plus). Personally, I'd hold out for a manual transmission, though.

Thanks for the response. I only want an auto. I test drove another tiptronic and liked it. It's a good price for the country I live in. Any other opinions?

mine has 110k miles on it, the previous owner used to travel to his company in mainland Europe with it so mostly motorway miles. with a service history, supporting documents and a repuatble dealer standing behind the car you should be ok.

at 80,000 miles you'll probably be in for drop links and suspension bushes, maybe a cail pack or two in the next couple of years.

I purchased my 99 about five years ago with 77,000 and I just hit 191,000 without any major problems. Hell, the clutch is still the same as when I purchased it. I am in need of suspension but still drive it everyday. I change the oil as recommended every 15,000. Yes, that's 15k not 1500. Great car.

I have a 2001 with over 243,000 miles on it. Original motor and original catalytic converters. Drive it, maintain it, don't let any issue go too long without fixing it.

Original IMS or have you changed it?

Figure you will need the following if they haven't been replaced

Suspension bushings / coils / shocks - but you can get by depending how you plan to use the car.
Starter
Air oil seperator
Water pump/ thermostat
Coolant tank
Clutch, but that may have been changed with the IMS
Brakes, the rotors may not have been replaced.

Price this in. Otherwise the car should last a while. There are many borders over 100k miles and some over 200k.

My 2001 3.2s has 117000 miles on it and runs great. As long as it has service history I dont think higher millage is a problem.

I'm going to get a comprehensive pre purchase inspection done at the local porsche dealer to see if it all turns out ok and go from there.

I only do 6000 or so miles a year so hopefully it can last me a long time!

ckrikos made a valuable comment about the AOS...

here's a tip.. get the dealer to replace it for you, tell them you'll pay for the cost of the part if they fit it before collection (and get an invoice for it for the car history) its a relatively cheap part but a fanny about to fit. ;)

Things fixed after 60k but before 80k on my 986s (garage kept weekend driven)

Clutch/ims/rms/flywheel (one job $3,000)
AOS
Coolant tank (known Boxster issue)
Catalytic converters (expensive)
MAF/ 1 O2 sensor
Shocks ($2,000 job)
Control arms
Alternator
Starter
Throttle body

After 80k:
Waterpump ($1,000)
Rotors ($1,000)
Soft top (will cost $1k - 1,400 when done)

Granted none of these repairs really came before 60k miles but then they came in costly waves ranging from $1k - $5k.

My advice be in a Porsche after 30k and out by 60k miles. There is simply too much inventory of 1999+ Boxsters, Carreras, Caymans too keep the prices up for too long. Never in Porsche history have literally hundreds of thousands of sports cars been produced in such a short amount of time, with even more on the way now that many will be switching over to the 991 Carrera and 981 Boxster/Cayman. We are up to our eyeballs in cars that the average sports car buyer is hesitant to get into because of Porsche's previous history as exoensive to repair and maintain. Basucally theres No need to go picking through the high milers and if you do makes sure shocks, clutch/ims, waterpump, rotors, AOS have been replaced -- nearly all are $1,000 repairs and common on winter driven cars by 100k miles

I have 143,000 on my 1999 986. So for me 80K is not that much for a 2001. I'll give you $10K for it... Just kidding, I'm sure its a great car.

GEELONGFAN I've got a 2001S with 80000 mi and can echo Perfectlap's comments. The car your looking at has just had a lot of work done (most of which I had to do on mine after buying at 65000 mi). I'd say your good to go , especially with the low yearly mileage you plan on driving. As I recently read in Excellence magazine,- the best car goes to he who waits, or something to that effect. Does the top show any wear?;)

I replaced the original bearing with the LNE bearing at 211,000 miles.

In my country cars are expensive (I'm looking at spending 20 000 for this.. Which is a good price haha). A lower mileage example sits at about 30 grand. So I figured the 10k extra I could keep for potential repairs. I can order in parts from the USA and just pay for labour here so it shouldn't be too bad. *fingers crossed *

Wow! Did the original look bad, like it was about to give out when you changed it? What year is your car?
