What to do with my old exhaust?
 

I recently upgraded and now have my secondary cats and muffler sitting around and just thought I'd poll others as to what you did with your old exhaust? I've read some hang onto them to put back on later. I know there are some metals in the cats (platinum for one) and I guess the parts could be useful to someone. Just trying to gauge... sell for recycling/scrap, Craigslist, anyone here want it?

Cats are very expensive as I understand it, and I did get a code once that my cats were not performing adequately.
After I cleared the code it has not come back for months so perhaps a false reading.

If those cats are still good it will help us Californians pass our smog tests.

Also be good for experimenting and customizing.

Put them up for sale on this site and I'll bet someone takes them.

Most older cars are worth more when they are original. I would hold on the the muffler and cats.

I sold mine and that covered the cost of my aftermarket exhaust! That was to keep my wife happy. When I sell, someone will be a happy camper.

The folks in CA have such strict emissions testing that they have bought those things for the cost of the aftermarket stuff AND paid shipping.

So don't underestimate the amount someone is willing to pay for your old "boat anchor".

With a name like Prospector….you have struck GOLD! or Platinum at least!

Cats would be worth something even to the local scrapper.

I would hang on to it. If you ever want to sell the car, the new buyer might insist to have the emission system stock

Keep the cats.

Maybe do one of the several sound enhancements on the mufflers, and sell them as such.

Used cat's are not worth much - even in Nazi emissions-friendly Commiefornia. eBay sells used cat's for $75-$150. Of course, you might get lucky and find someone who is willing to pay more but that is not typical.

As for the scrap value of the platinum - while there are several GRAMS of this exotic material in a cat (28 grams per ounce), when the recovery cost is included in the equation, the materials recovery value from a used cat isn't exactly a gold mine (and hence, why they sell for $75-$150 on eBay).

I needed an exhaust clamp for the cats to the u-pipe (just ordered it yesterday). Anyway, I was looking on eBay for exhaust clamps and I noticed to the side where you can narrow your search that I could narrow it by new / used. I just had to giggle about people selling used exhaust clamps. While I'm sure there were a couple rare clamps on there that you could only find used, most of them seemed very ordinary and very used. Just amusing to me and perhaps that may be the way to go. I would rather be rid of it than let it sit around cluttering up my garage or storage area.

Ask BruceH. He got some really cool ones. I bought a set through him/with his help. I don't remember the company but they mold to the exhaust and are a breeze to take on and off - I have proved that 3+ times since I have had them!

It is connecting my Cat Bypass pipes. They weren't very expensive and are heavy duty!
