				saw Cayman at lunch

our local dealer (McDaniels) got their first Cayman, went to see it at lunch. Beautiful car, good looking lines. Sticker $58 plus PCM, PASM sport chrono, Bose and couple of others got to $71.
This car was marked "PCNA Car - Not for Sale".
PCNA is buying cars?

The National Launch Date is January 15th. The cars marked as "PCNA- Not for Sales" are the demo cars that were drived by the dealers during the Cayman training sessions (like in Atlanta). One dealer told me these cars will eventually go back to Porsche North America to possibly be used in events like "Porsche's Driving Experience".

can't wait for the RUF power/styling overhaul. Might be the 'purest' P-car to date.

A couple of weeks back, one of the younger salespersons mentioned going to Atlanta. Sales people usually don't grin but I take it he enjoyed his ride.
Everybody has their own view of life, but this car yells out to me "Take me to the track!"
Why else does it exist? If you're not going to the track, spend the marginal difference and get a Carrera coupe, or save some money and get a Boxster convertible.

But it's got good looks. Really good, IMHO.
Pause. Wipe drool. OK, all done.

Hoen has one also. It also indicates it is an PCA car. Same sticker at 71K.

Much better looking in person than in the pictures.

I would suspect that Cayman will cannibalize some 911 sales with minimal impact on Boxster S.
 |
I respectfully agree & disagree!

Disagree- I did not think the Cayman felt huge inside vs. the Boxster. But my reference point is a 987. Possibly yours is a 986.

Agree- yes, I think the Cayman will take away from 911 sales. Boxster owners love to drop-the-top!

I saw it at lunch as well in Alabama. I love the curves. Porsches have such nice curves. It felt just like a 987 inside.
I saw a cobalt blue one on a video posted on PPBB and it looked awesome. I don't think I would buy a blue car but it was really catching my eye.

Why not just go for the Carrera?
Well that's assuming the Carrera owner finds the driving characteristics of his car similar to a shorter wheel base, mid engine, better handling coupe.
Excellence seems to disagree reporting that the CaymanS is far better a handling car than lower Carreras going as far to say that it might be the best handling Porsche (under $100,000) ever.

and saving money should never be the rationale for opting for Boxster over a Cayman. I think thats sort of like saying "save some money on that 7 series BMW and buy an X5 instead". two cars with different purposes.

But I agree the CaymanS is built for performance first, Backseat passenger considerations fall to the Carrera.
THe CaymanS is a car for a purist. Too bad we'll never see a turbo engine in one those.

Is that what they call that miniscule space behind the front seats!

I consistenly get somewehere between 27 and 32mpg on the highway in my 987 -- I usually cruise in 5th between 100km/h and 115km/h (62-72mph). This is both with the top down and up.

City mileage, on the other hand is atrocious for me - - as low as 12 and up to 18. Nowhere near the 22 on the sticker.

Your mileage may, of course, vary (sorry.. couldn't resist)

Saw the silver one that Eslai mentions over at Pioneer Centres. Seriously good looking car, for some reasons pictures don't do it justice...better looking from the back than J. Lo. IMHO much more interesting looking car than a 911 (...but that isn't saying a whole lot).

Yeah, in person you don't notice the bubble roof as much since you're close up to it. Looks a lot better than in pictures. Still wouldn't buy one though--I can't abide the pricing and the "Right Between the Boxster and Carrera" marketing.
As for 987 gas mileage, I filled up, went cruising and found that around 75 MPH I was getting about 24 MPG. The 28 MPG score is definitely a 55 to 65 MPH rating.

I usually average out to 16-17 MPG by the time I fill up, according to the computer.

Yes, this car does look great in person. I think it is because there are a lot of subtle lines, that photos just don't pick-up.

This car is TOO EXPENSIVE. I predict slow sales after the glow wears off!

This may prove true, Richard, but vs. the 911 they would be saving money, and could be getting a "better" car.

i think All P-Cars are too expensive! Really for the price of a Carrera or Boxster in terms of performance per dollar there are far better options for both. And those guys in Stugart are laughing all the way to the Deutch Bank!

The Cayman sounds like its every bit the sportscar that the Carrera is, not sure if it was confirmed but it was said the that the more expensive 997 was beaten by the CaymanS in track testing for lap times.

Excellence has called the Cayman the best handling (non RS/CGT) Porsche EVER.
Given its history that's quiet a statement. If true I hardly doubt the price is too high if they are going to continue to price the other Porsches as they currently are.

GREAT NEWS: My buddy just placed a deposit on the CaymanS! getting rid of the of that 7 series rag top thing. Oh its only a matter of time before were flogging it at the next PCA Autocross!!! --wiping drool from keyboard.
