HELP, mechanic says I need a new engine...
 

I have a thread a few posts downs "chunky brown sludge in coolant" and in the entire thread we've been discussing what the issue could be for coolant and oil being mixed.

I brought the car to a new "Porsche" shop this morning and without even looking at it guy tells me I need a new engine. Pissed me right off.

I explained my issue and told him it shouldn't need a replacement. Just a proper flush and inspect if the oil cooler is working properly.


Car has 70,000 km on it. Doubt it needs a new engine.

I have read your other threads and it is good to see that you did a bunch of legwork prior to getting to this point. If you are questioning the health of your oil cooler, then you should probably remove it and have it pressure tested. If it checks-out ok, then you probably do have something else going on that will ultimately require the engine to come out for repair/replacement. Not something anyone wants to come to grips with.

As for your mechanic, I do agree that as a customer, he should have done as you asked. But keep in mind, the service tech has probably seen thousands of cars, that someone else has attempted to fix. Often, the person who attempted the repair is the same person giving the tech advice on what should be done to sort-it-out and repair it.

I do a different kind of service work for a living and it does get old when the person who hires me, after attempting to fix it by them self, give me directives on how they want a particular repair performed when he or she does not have the experience and insight that I may have into the problem.

Get a second opinion. Even excellent mechanics sometimes miss stuff and they only know what they know. A bore scope should be revealing. If coolant is in the oil pan and has entered the cylinders, it is probably toast.

I am a fan of getting a second opinion when facing expensive repairs. Whether having a shop look at your car or fixing it yourself, you need a solid diagnosis.

I have also reread through your other posts and I see that others have suggested having the oil cooler pressure tested. WHY HAVEN'T YOU DONE THAT? :confused:

I don't want to be harsh, but it seems like a waste of time for everyone when you haven't listened to the advice of others, yet you continue to go in circles with what to do and where to take it.

Face the music and either do it yourself or pay someone else to properly diagnose it for you.

Sounds like you need a repair.

and a new shop.
I recently instructed a class in Toronto and wasn't impressed with the knowledge base there. Edmonton was much better.
